This is what they are for.

Nice display BroonsBane!

So, why are they crappy, the composition I supposy? Is it not vinyl-y as a regular LP?

One of my pictures disks has some lifting or bubbling on the surface. It seems like there is some kind of plastic layer that the recording is on and that is placed on top of the record as a laminate or something. It's not a very good pic but I tried to get the bubbling to show, you can see it in the one spot if you look for it. I can feel the gap between the lifted part of the laminate and the hard surface of the record when I push down on it.

I do not know about the construction, but I will say not to dismiss all picture discs as sounding "bad" out of hand. I have a Nightmare Before Christmas two-disc picture set that sounds fantastic! :music:

And the surface is still vinyl, but on some pressings it is very thin, which may account for the poor sound quality. The examples I have are very thick.

Bingo! Some have thicker clear vinyl and are pressed from good stampers, where others have a very thin layer of vinyl and are pressed from retired stampers. (According to what I was once told.) Regardless, they are all vinyl.
