Looking for a Denon DCD (CD player). Any advice?

SuperKris

Vintage Hi-Fi
When i bought my PMA-900V i bought a cheap Denon DCD-690 to replace my crapy sony. I payed ony 20$ for it so i dint really care about the sound, but now its really skipping a lot all the time, so i want a new one.

I dont listen to CD's a lot. Most of the time i only listen to digital (MP3/FLAC) or when i want better quality i listen to vinyl.

Anyways. I would like it to be a Denon because i would like to get a complete denon set that goes with my my curent amp.

I dont want to spent too much. 100$ max, and if i can do with a lot less i wouldnt mind. Also it has te be avadible in silver. I dont care about DVD.

Any advice in what model to buy?

I've got a Denon DCD-1100 I picked up for a whopping $20 on that auction site. While I would prefer to have picked up a 1500II or a 1560 (as I understand it the higher the number the more desirable they are) the 1100 has a sweet, warm sound and was well worth what I paid. As for the silver thing, I know there are some to be had but can't advise ya there.

Have you given any thought to buying a Denon DVD-2910? Plays everything and you have your silver....

Most denons are avadible in silver. I was already looking at the 1500. it weights 10Kg (20 pounds) so how bad can it be :P Also its cheap at 30-40 euro (40-50$) The 1560 is a bit too much for me. It goes for 100-150 euro (135-200$) I dont care enough about CD's to spend that.

Only there is a normal DCD-1500 and a Mark II. Anyone knows the diffrence?

Yes, there is a big difference. I know the 1560 uses the legendary KSS-151A laser mechanism. I believe the 1500 uses the much older KSS-123A or KSS-121A. The 121A is like a $30 laser and KSS-151A is a $170 laser. The circuitry and weight and design of the 1560 is FAR superior to me.

the 1500II also uses the 151A. not cheap to replace, and many of them seem to be going bad now if they haven't already. i had the 1500II in my system for a while and really liked it, but it had some problems from shipping. then an opportunity to grab a DCD-3000 popped up recently, and from what i've gleaned it's in the top four or so of Denon's all-time lineup. i hope to have it in my hands soon. i think that once you get above 1500 in the model number, you can't really go wrong, depending on the level of the rest of your system.

I purchased my DCD-1300 off of Shop Goodwill.com. I paid a whole $5.00 for it. When it arrived I cleaned it up and it played with no hitches. I guess in some respects I am lucky because at first I was hesitant about biding on this due to all the reviews and opinions I read during my research.

My suggestion is to scan the offerings at Shopgoodwill.com daily and you might just find what you are looking for.

I picked up a BOTL Denon DCD520 CD player at a yard sale.
Wouldn't know it was an old BOTL CD player from hearing it?
I never heard a piece of Denon equipment that wasn't good.

denon is amost always "good" but it can always be better. For example, the diffrence between a PMA-900V and a PMA980R is really there! The 900 is much better!

I gues its the same with the CD players. Im still looking for a DCD-1500 Mk2. I was already bidding on a few, but the got a bit more expencive on ebay germany lately. Another nice function of the DCD-1500 is the variable volume output. My amp doesnt have a remote controll.

I was also looking at the DCD-1800, but i understand this one doesnt play burned CD's. Can anyone confim this?

Hi,

i just bought the DENON DCD-1800R (a 1800 with remote) and definitly plays burned CDs.

Cheerio,

Denon DCD-1500II :thmbsp: Got mine for $40 at a pawn shop. I suspect that the former owner thought it was broken because the tray would not open with one push of the Open button. You need to hit Stop and then hit the Open button three times. I can live with that considering the great performance and the price I paid.
