There is one available in my area, and wondered if anyone has any experience with one.

Why, bolly? I thought anything with the Leak name was worth having. Of course, that's just an impression I have not based on personal experience with anything but the Sandwich speakers.

well stereofanboy, I've never owned a Leak tuner so could be yakkin out me arse, but read about many Leak, it's the Leak tube amps that are desireable

Here is the schematic:

and here is the accompanying article.

As you can see, it has a cascode front end for low RF noise and decent sensitivity, switchable AFC, switching of the B+ to the RF stage for local/distant sensitivity control, two IF stages followed by a limiter and a Foster-Seeley discriminator. It has direct multiplexer and cathode follower outputs. The tuning eye is a nice touch.

The claim to fame was the oscillator that used a semicircular cross section tuned line about 6" long with a line in the centre connected to the tuning capacitor in the oscillator. This was claimed to minimize drift although they did hedge their bets with AFC anyway.

I paid about $20 for mine. They eventually came out with a 3-transistor multiplexer that was not up to the standards of the rest of the receiver, but there are outboard multiplexers available from the early 60's that would be good. (Or you could excise the multiplex adaptor from a cheap boom box and add it on.)

Tube Leak equipment is among the finest in the world. The TroughLine tuner is easily the best British tuner ever made. My wife still owns her example. Superb sounding and very sensitive. Worth beaucoup bucks used in nice shape. There's plenty of information on H.J. Leak products out there on the net. Google Leak TroughLine and you can likely find an updated MPX adapter which ours has. Really improves FM stereo performance. Ingjerd has owned her example since 1969. Leak and Quad in England are equivalent to Marantz and McIntosh then.
