Man, the 1060 is sweet

I finally picked up my first marantz yesterday, mint condition 1060 (with wood case) that had recently been professionaly serviced. All I can say is wow, I am very happy with this amp. I have yet to find an album that does not sound good on it. The phono section is quite nice. Why did this amp sound so good?

I had posted a thread in the 'vintage solid state' forum a month or two back in which I asked how my pioneer sa-6800 would stack up, and the general response I received was that both were great, but the marantz would have a warmer sound. That is pretty much bang on, very warm indeed, while my pioneer seems to be a bit more crisp and "rockin". I found on my 6800 that I would almost always leave the loudness button in the 'on' position, but with some recordings this is absolutely not necessary on the 1060.
Anyway, I've had this amp playing constantly since I got it in the door and am in love with the sound.

Not that everyone needs to see yet another 1060, but here they are anyway. My wife even commented on the wood case, and such praise in our house on audio equipment is quite rare indeed. :D

Verry nice unit, I want your wood case for my 1200. I cant seem to find any decent WC1's lately. I wanted one for Christmas!

Enjoy the "new" 1060.

Peace,

Phil

I have the same one, minus the woody, and I have not found anything I can afford that I like better. In reading some anecdotal info (ie I got nothing to back it up) the preamp that was used in this production line was one of their TOL preamps and it was speculated they had just produced more than they needed for another application and used them up in the 1090's and 1060's if this is true or not, I just love mine, and thought mine had blown a circuit board or something and as it turned out it was the surge protector (Thank heavens for that) I would love to get some closeups of the wood case and some detailed measurements if you ever are in the mood to do so. I want to make one. I have tried to buy one and it always seems to skyrocket out of my league. So time to get the hammer and saw out. One other thing, Isn't she pretty?
I see a Denon peeking out from under which one is that?

Hey - the woodcase (WC10) for the 1060 does not fit the 1200. What you want IS the WC-1.

best regards
Freddy

No problems, just PM me and I can send ya some measurements if you like. As for the tuner, that would be a TU-800. Although it would be nice to find a nice matching marantz tuner, maybe a 125 or higher with wood case, I am hesitant to replace the Denon as it is the best tuner I've ever owned.

And yeah, she is purty. I'm listening to some Stevie Ray on vinyl as I type this and it is incredible.

that thing is a real beauty. Thanks for posting the pic.
Yeah, that case really makes it shine :thmbsp:
Love the Marantz sound

I thought that was the 800, I had bought a Marantz 2020 not realizing the size difference. But it was a good experience, fixing cleaning adjusting etc. In looking it seems the 125 and 150 would be a nice match and I think the 104,105 series seem to be the right width. That is the problem I ran into is they are narrower than most, about 14.5" Right now I have mine perched on a Kenwood KT7300, looks a little funny but it works. Enjoy

1060 yes

One of my first stereo buys was a 1060. I bought used in about 82 or 83. My buddies laughed at me because for the same price I coulda gotta bigger, digital receiver. The salesman had sold me on the sound so I didn't mind the size. It's sounded great with any speakers I've tried it with and it's always been my bedroom/ fall asleep to amp- lots of hours. I remember the sales guy telling me I'd still have this amp when I was an old man. Touche.

It's a very fine small amp, that sonically "punches above its belt" compared to many amps of comparable power. It makes a great amp for a computer-sound set up. It makes a great amp for a headphone amp. It makes a nice phono preamp/amp. It won't fill a large room with sound from inefficient speakers, but for any modest system in a smaller room it is more than sufficient. An excellent choice for a vintage system on a budget or with size restrictions, and it has that classical look to it.

I like the 1060 enough that I still keep two of them around, in spite of "downsizing" and getting rid of a lot of other gear.

Barry, congrats on finding such a beautiful 1060! I also have a professionally serviced 1060, and I couldn't be happier. There's something magical about this amp, and I can believe the story about the TOTL preamp section. I put it up to my reconditioned 2226 (a slightly newer design than the 1060 IIRC) and it's phono stage (and everything else) far surpassed it.

I'm using it now as a preamp for a Phase Linear 400. I'm very happy with the results, though I wonder what input others might have about that arrangement. Regardless, the 1060 is a versatile beauty.

My wife even commented on the wood case, and such praise in our house on audio equipment is quite rare indeed.

...and, like you, this was the amp that got my wife interested my audio pursuits. Happy listening!

Nice 1060 you have there! I love my 1060 too. I just had mine serviced and recapped and it is doing duty as my computer amp. I also have my X Box 360 hooked up to it too. I have the wood case but it needs to be re-veneered.

Chalk up at least a third new/old 1060 owner here who is using it w/ thier computer setup. According to what I'm using it for I'll just have it coupled in the back & run the tape in/out to the computer, or sometimes run the pre-amp out to the soundcard in & the soundcard out to the amp-in on the 1060. I have one of the new ASUS Xonar Essence St sound cards which is a very nice sounding card in its own right & the combo of the super resolution & low distortion of the card & the 1060 taking off some of the "diditality" of the Xonar is a nice combo. I like the phono preamp section of the 1060 as well. Didn't know too much about the 1060's in general before getting it, but was just extremely lucky in making the choice of this particular model. We's got us the makings of a cult here!! (just don't ask me to drink the Kool-aid!!).

I don't have the 1060 but I have the 1030 and the 1090 and all I can say is that the pre section on the 1090 sounds better than most of my stand alone pres. The 1030 is no slouch either for only being 15 watts/channel, this baby sounds as warm as most tube amps to me. Congrats on your acquisition, this series of Marantz gear is destined to become highly collectible some day.

Cool. I'm using an ASUS Xonar as well. Nice sound.

Can I ask what you paid for your 1060? I'm currently bidding on a newly cleaned 1060B ($99, Buy Now $139) but there's a pristine 1090 ($100) and a 1060 coming due in a few days. It's already over $50, but I fear it will jump out of my price range ($150 max). Thanks much.

Don't get the 1060B. Make sure you get the 1060. What is clean. Clean as in looks spotless, or clean as having been serviced and recapped?

About the 1060

Hi Mark,
Thanks for getting back to me. The 1060B was cleaned with De-Ox, opened up and checked for problems (photos included). But it was not re-capped. It was used w/a CDP and sounds fine. The guy has perfect feedback.
Why don't you like the B? Would you go with the 1090? One last thing: there's also a Yamaha CA600 for $65 at the moment. That will probably jump too. What do you think about the Yamaha vs. Marantz.
Thanks again.
Cheers, Jordan

I could be wrong here (experts, please interject if I am) but the 1060 and the 1060b are two different animals. For example, the 1060 has a damping factor of 100 and the 1060b has a damping factor of 30. That is just one difference. The 1060b has the fugly sliders. The 1060 has preout, main in capability, the 1060b doesn't. The 1060 is very underrated as to power output. I believe that the preamp section of the 1060 is far different and superior to the 1060b. I am sure that the many techs on this forum could tell you more than I can.
Hope this helps.
