What purpose do the 4 large 22,000uf caps serve and do you routinely replace all four when doing a recap?

As long as you are in there ---Why Not??
I have had 2 1250's rebuilt and I did not want to half-ass it...best to go all the way.
My reason is I want to get the full sound out of it --- and they both are earth shattering.

All depends upon the thickness of your wallet $$$...

They can be expensive - from 80 bucks to do them, through 80 bucks apiece - depending upon what you find available and neglecting my faulty memory of where to get them.

Some say it is cheaper and easier to take them out and measure the ESR....I have heard the filter cap's for the most part are usually ok most of the time...But it is nice to know that all your outdated old Lytic's are new, tighter tolorance units...Like MTF Said $$$$$$

ESR is only a sliver of the story, and doesn't tell you anything about if the cap is preparing to vent or not. Better just to replace them unless you're on a tight budget.

My regular source of United Chemi-Con 22,000µf 100V caps is gone, but Digikey now carries that same cap...for $52 each, or about 2x what I used to pay. But, they also carry an Epcos (German) 22,000µf 100V cap that will do fine for about $32 each.

I ordered 12 of them, and they have 11 left. Hopefully they will order more when those run out.

Thanks for the reference. If I order a thousand I can get them for just over $20 each:D

I found a place that has used ones. He suggested I replace only the bad one. I don't have a budget in mind but I'm afraid recapping the entire unit is beyond my capabilities. Old eyes and somewhat unsteady hands compared with 20yrs. ago. I've got to get the pots clean and some other things I can do before I decide what I want to do. Thanks to all who offered help!

When replacing the 4 caps , which i bought mine (NIPPON CHEMI-CON 22000 mfd 100v ) the blue ones sometime back still waiting to install them. Isnt there something you put across the + and - post of the caps . I want to say i have seen this before but i cant find the thread on it . If so what is the parts and were to get them ? What is the purpose of installing these ?
If i recall right when EW did my Spec 2 there was something on those caps also?

Thanks

a 2.2uf stacked film capacitor across each one.

digikey P10983-ND about a buck 2.2uf 250v
mouser 5989-250V2.2-F about 2 bucks 2.2uf 250v

They do a better job of presenting a low impedance ground path for really high frequency signals, frequencies that the inductance of the big capacitors do a less than perfect job bypassing to ground.

HAS to be stacked film caps, lytics and most caps are "toilet paper rolls" of foil which have parasitic inductance, stacked film caps are more like two books with their pages interleaved and the electrical connections along the binding of the pages on opposite sides.

yeah .. LOL !

Seems that the Parts suppliers are really raising prices lately,
especially on parts for vintage stuff... just my imagination probably.

I don't buy parts much for other stuff.

...which is irrelevant anyway, since they don't have any.

Well thats odd , i just placed a oder for (8) of them today and they were $1.00 each . I may have to double check on those . They even sent me a email saying once shipped i would be notified ? Now im wondering if i missed something ?

BACK ORDERED! They charged you a dollar to hold your order pending on the credit card.
