Backlight Mod for Sansui 7000?

Hello there!

Does anyone know how, or if it's even possible to get the dial lamp to stay on all the time on this model of Sansui receiver? I originally found the posts about doing this on a 9090, and I'll do that on mine eventually, but it's running hot and needs to get looked at by a professional. Unfortunately, it will be awhile until I can afford it.

I have been running this 7000 as my backup and I really like it! But I pretty much never listen to the radio and use mostly phono and Aux. I would LOVE to get those foxy green lights on all the time.

Anybody know anything about this?

Thanks so much!

I'd like to ask the same thing about my Eight Deluxe and my Six. Love them both, but the dial lights go out for everything except the tuner. Would like to keep them on too. Guess thats why I use my 881 instead of the Deluxe.:scratch2:

The dial lights are switched thru the function switch so get the service manual and figure it out.

Did I offend somehow or am I misreading you DCinDC?

If I wasn't reasonably sure I'd ruin something on my much loved receiver without some guidance by those who know more and have come before me, I would do just that. But any kind of service manuals and schematics look like a foreign language to me no matter how much I look at them. There are things I understand and can do (and I'm happy to offer help to others when asked about them) but this is not one of them.

I also figured since here: http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51901 this was happily discussed and advice shared and here: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums /showthread.php?t=59078 someone had gone out of their way to share their knowledge of this procedure on a different receiver, it was OK to ask.

Maybe not?

Oh well.

No, just getting your level of skill. It was a terse answer I realize but one would hate to give a detailed answer when it isn't necessary. This stuff does take time and is free.

I'll be working on several 7000s real soon, so I'll figure it out for ya. Stay subscribed to the thread.

Oh awesome! Sorry if my response was a little much. I'll keep an eye on this thread and if I actually manage to learn something in the meantime I'll be sure to pipe up. Much appreciated!

DC, if you happen to do a Eight or a Six, throw some info my way too. Lord knows I would be forever grateful!!:thmbsp:

I'm not sure, but I bet any info regarding this for the 7000 would transfer to the Eight. I think they are nearly identical. I know there are differences I don't understand, but I think they are mostly in the power and amplifier sections. :scratch2:

Backlight Always On mod for Sansui 7000

Ok, I got into one 7000 (actually four) recently and sussed out what you need to do to have the dial lights on all the time. I have two on the bench together so it was easy to get pics. So don't get confused by the pics. The first pic is one 7000, the rest of the pics are the other one.

Warning: This requires considerable disassembly. You could easily really screw up your stuff just disassembling the receiver to get down to the point where you can do the mod. If you do, that is NOT my fault. Take your time, you're going in deep.

I assume you can do the disassy work, if not post back.

- remove top cover and bottom plate
- remove knobs, nuts, screws, and face
- remove two silver screws on the bottom and fish out the tone board.
- remove threaded sheetmetal collar around the selector switch shaft (2 screws)
- remove selector switch nut
- unplug the piece of the connector on the tone board with the wires that goes to the selector switch AND the tape monitor 1/4" jacks. Just that one, not all of them. Be careful and don't crack the tone board! This is for access to swing out the selector switch.
- fish the selector switch out of the chassis.

-on the back of the front-most gang of the switch, short out the two blue wires that have a lead from the bipolar cap on them. They are shown in the last pic with yellow twisty ties around them. You can leave the cap or remove it, it doesn't matter. Use insulated wire! The power supply for the lights is not fused.

Again, this ain't easy or for the squeamish! Don't screw up! :D

The result is: the dial lights, meter light, and pointer light all stay on all the time. You could further modify it so only the dial lights stay on, and the meter and pointer lights go out on other functions but that's a lot more work. Some other brands of receivers operate like this.

I have no confidence that this works on the Six, Seven, Eight, or Eight Deluxe, but I will be working on those in the near future and will make a thread for those models.

While it's apart, clean all the pots and switches!

If you remove the dial face too be very careful around the model number lettering on the glass, it will rub right off.

You're welcome. Send beer, money or Karma!

Bless you, & thank you. :D I'll have to give this a try sometime soon. The 7000 is one of my favorite pieces of gear, & I've made a nuisance of myself about it before, I guess. ;) Anyone who plays one much knows why though. :thmbsp:

Just wanted to give a belated thanks for this DCinDC. Sadly, I ended up short of cash back then and sold my Seven. Kept the 9090. Wish I'd done it the other way around. I've missed the Seven ever since.

Hey DCinDC,

Did the mod work out for the 8/8D? I'm presented with the opportunity to get one but those lights not turning on is a deal breaker.

I took it a step further with my 7000. Dial lamps on all the time, PLUS dial needle changes colour when FM stereo locks in. I ended up reverting back to normal needle lighting TBH has I thought it was going to far somehow.

My Yamaha T550 does that and it's awesome! If you change the bulb in the needle (PL014) with antiparallel 0603 LEDs you can leave the original wiring but have to add additional circuitry (two transistors and some resistors) to properly drive the LEDs.

I know this is an old thread. Recently acquired a Sansui 7000 and performed the light mod as described in this thread. Did it exactly. The dial now stays on for every input but the meters still only light for the FM. Interesting also that the meters are working for AM but don’t light for AM.
Any thoughts? Thanks all!
