Ok, I'm tinkering again.
After searching for a while for a cheap remote volume control to use with my vintage TV sound system, I stumbled across a couple of these Sansui RS-100 units on epay. (Paid a whopping $2.99 for the last one). Originally intended to control a number of interconnected Sansui components, it consists of a control box, an infrared receiver and remote. I don't have any Sansui gear but it works very well as a volume control on pretty much any gear when connected in-line with the amp inputs or hooked into the tape loop.
On the back is an unswitched power outlet that I'm thinking could be coverted to 'switched' to provide remote on/off for the amplfier. On the modular plug I can measure sustained 0.5V DC when one of the remote's function buttons is pressed. Can anyone recommend a relay that is capable of switching (toggle mode) 120V AC (5 amp ?) triggered by 0.5V ? If I can find one, it should be a pretty simple job to wire it in.
