JoeDotCom's confused smattering of toys.

A friend of mine came over this weekend to play with my new to me Avid 103's I took some photos to share w/ ya'll....

I am going to come back and type out the model info for all the toys in a bit. photos first. :)

I borrowed a Crown CE 1000 Amp to play with. But I needed a preamp, so i had a Numark EM-360 that we hooked up. This room is normally the kid's play room, so this setup only lasted for the night then got broken down.

Polk RTA 12b (thanks for the identification help tx_polkhead) The original owner had a wooden lid made for the speakers to keep their cats from ruining the top grill. (it looks like it would be really comfy up there if I was a cat.)

Thanks Rome. I love the Polks. :)

Last weekend was really the first time i was able to really open them up. Living in a townhouse w/ my kids upstairs makes it tough to really rock out. I was really impressed w/ the Polks. (The Avids held their own too). The crown did not blow me away though. I expected it to be way too powerful for the speakers. Its twin ce 1000 drives all the speakers on our football field, loud! So, i was surprised when i was able to turn it up to 100% and not need to pick chunks of the speaker surrounds out of my teeth.

Joe-
your sig says 'Polk RTA 12(C?) ' I am pretty sure they are 12B's by the look of the tweeter, also what does the crossover board say on the right edge (looks like a B to me but the pic is a bit blurry)? My C's have the SL2000 silver voice coil tweeters (less desirable than yours) and the CO boards say 'RTA 12 __ ISOPHASE CROSSOVER where the blank should have A B or C written in, I guess.

Wow TX, you Rock!!! I was pretty sure they were C's based on my google image searching. I can't believe it said the model right there. Wicked, thanks for the discovery.

So from what I have read, the B's have a diffrent (as you said, more desirable) tweeter. What is the diffrence? And why would a presumably later model (C comes after B) have a lessor driver?

Thanks again for A) looking and B) for the tip!!!

The earlier Polks with the Pearless tweeter have quite the following. The SL2000 Silver Coil tweeter is said to have a spike that some find harsh, it sounds good to me. The later SL2500 'black dome' tweeter found on some later models is an improvement over the silverss, but I don't have any pearless to compatre them to.
You can see my RTA's here:

Some day I'll think about updating the crossover parts.

Reorganizing the office/media room. Pulled the CV VS-120s out to play with. Been a while since I have played them.

OMFG!!!! When I was maybe 19 and broke I saw and heard a pair of those in a guys basement in Waynesville MO and I just thought those were the coolest ever. I have not seen another pair since. Anywhere, even online. Thanks for the trip.

System update July 2nd 2011

Just adding some updated pics and model numbers:

PHONO: Technics SL-QD33
CART: M12E-U
GAME: PS3 Slim (BFBC2 FTW!)
CLAN: Team MP (The Parents' Playground: teammp.net)
SACD: MARANTZ DV6600
RECEIVER: Onkyo SR705
PREAMP: Numark EM-360*
SUB / 5.1: Altec Lancing 5.1 THX PC Speaker system**
SPEAKERS: Polk RTA 12B
TV: Panasonic rear projection

*It appears that the phono input on the SR705 is dead. no signal from a phono source, and even tried a known working CD player to verify signal presence with no luck. so the Numark is my preamp for now.

** the PC 5.1 kit is just here to supplement until i can figure out what to use for my rear channel for gaming. :) I do not have the front speakers on Altec system plugged in. only the center and rears are connected.

reorganized a bit. Got my pioneer sx 980 back up and running. and stacked my avid 103's on top of my freshly repared pioneer cs-63dx's. (only listening to 1 pair at a time, both sound awesome)

Gotta show off the new goodies / arrangement:

tube amp: Grant Fidelity MS-2A3 (one of only two in existence)

squeezebox (How did I live without this thing?)

Currently the SX-980 is only acting as a phono pre for the turntable.

I packed away the Avid 103 and the Pioneer CX-63DX pairs for a bit.

I like it! You've got some very nice equipment there, with some great looking layouts.

I'm surprised I didn't see the Sherwood RX-5502 in there someplace. :)

Thanks Bill.

The Sherwood never made it into my listening room since it was dead to the world until you were able to work your magic on it. (Plus I try to avoid posting pics of my cluttered "workbench" area where my non-working toys live.)
