Kenwood KR-4070 worth my time??

I spotted a kr-4070 this afternoon at my local thrift shop. THey want 24 bucks for it, but it has a chopped cord. It does have the wood cabinet which is in fairly good shape. I understand that this is a 50 wpc receiver made from about 78-81. Its this worth trying to resurrect? I need a fairly decent receiver while I'm rebuilding my scott 233 integrated.

Thanks for your input

I'm always asking and never answering, so I did a little research online for ya, and found one of these for sale at Oak Tree. 50watts and 8 ohm, seems to have all the standard features that we vintage reciever lovers have come to expect from reasonably hi end stuff, without any really bells of whistles. Powerfull though. I'd buy it at twenty bucks, esp if it has a broken cord. Right away, you know whats wrong with it, why it's there, and how to fix it. I don't know jack, but I've replaced a few cords with stuff baught at the dollar store (litterally) and if I can do it anyone can.

IMO, the KR-4070 is one of the most gorgeous, best laid-out receivers EVER. For 24 bucks, I'd say go for it.

PS - Never heard of one with the wood case, but cool anyways!

You are serious right?? I'd grab it if twice the price. . . clean it up and sell it for 2 to 3 times what I paid for it, and in the mean time I would use it. That model has the nicest loudness contour for low level listening, great tuner (Kenwood right. . .).

No question in my mind. . .

thanks for your input guys, I'll go grab it this morning if it's not gone already. So far people look at the cord and walk away...

Interesting that this model # is highly thought of. Saw an ad for one that looks good in the picture, supposedly everything works fine. Wish it was for 24 bucks but they are asking $80. Is it worth that much? I was thinking about $45 to 50 but doubt they will go that low.

If its a cherry unit that is working perfectly, I would grab it for 75, but no more than that.

The 24 dollar one I bought had a chopped cord, needed dial lights, and some amp work. In the end I ended up spending about 35 dollars worth of time and parts to get it working. Somebody offered me 75 for it and I took the offer. it was a nice receiver, fairly good on power the reserve power. I think it was around 50 wpc.

I'd for sure buy it for $24. These went for about $35 a couple years ago on Epay and are usually a little more now.

I bought my 4070 new back in early '78 and it is still making music out in my garage. It is 40/wpc, the 5030 is 50/wpc and there are I think a couple more above that, a 60** and maybe a 80** model too, it's hard to remember. Those are all on a slightly wider chassis and a slightly different layout than the 4070 and 3090 which is about 30/wpc. The 4070 only has a two-gang tuning capacitor and is just the basics, no frills. It's a pretty tough little receiver and has beautiful fluted knobs, the same ones as on the 9600 and other bad boys.

Was hoping to use the 4070 to run a pair of KLH 32's. I think my Yamaha R700 is too powerful for the 32's and I am leary of cranking the power up. The RSa speakers have been in the shop for about a month now getting a new surround and hopefully a new tweeter. Hopefully they haven't forgotten me!

If the rebuilt RSa is not capable of handling the R700, I may have to go to a higher rated speaker. Any suggestions?

Sold 'em new--get it.

These were decent receivers. Found on in the landfill. Broke my heart when I determined it had a bad power trannie :thumbsdn: Sucks! Parted it out and sent parts to a kid in Seatle. Never did hear if he fixed his. For $24 Id get it!! :D

I had one back in the late 70's. A Dual & some Quadraflex speakers completed the package deal from a Pacific Stereo in Chicago. It's a hardy little receiver, the wood cabinet makes the deal better.

My sister 'inherited' it when I went into the service. She still uses it and I'm still trying to get it back from her! She still has those speakers, too. :D

I have a Kenwood KR-4070 I bought on ebay for $104.75 real nice receiver very well built powerful too!! at 40 wpc. The KR-4070 does not have a wood cabinet though.

I guess I would need to reclarify what my goal is ...

Is the cord completely cut off? or is it just mangled? Neither seem very good signs. You obviously won't be able to test it before buying. If it was cut off, I would be concerned there may have been a reason like not intended for resale.

If my goal is an actual "working" fairly decent receiver while rebuilding the Scott, I would pass and walk away like the others.

If I wanted another potential project and later get an actual "working" fairly decent receiver while rebuilding the Scott, I would still pass and walk away like the others.

But what your time is worth may be different from mine

Most sell online in the $40-60 range; I just sold one for $39.

Nice little receiver and certainly spare worthy. We played it at a BBQ last summer through my Dynaco A25s and it was more than adequate.

Yep, it is, but that doesn't mean we can't update it with more current info and opinions.

...and I am glad that people are. Ironically I just bought a KR-4070 this morning, and wanted to see what people thought of this receiver. So far, I see many positive reviews.

I had a KR-3090 (my first receiver) and in less than a year it developed a problem with the power switch. I am finding out that this might have been a problem with this particular line from Kenwood.

Yes, but you can make a new thread to so other members will actually look at it.

This a common problem with these receivers as is with the KR-2090, 3090, 4070, 5030, and 6030. Their is a fix where you clean the switch and replace the wiper. Use the google search to help find it.
