Which One To Keep??

Yesterday we went to an estate sale and down on the basement covered with dust, I found a Garrard A70. I didn't test it there but just rotated the platter by hand and see if everything was smooth. And it was. The auto cycle cycled as it was supposed to do. It also had a Pickering ATE cartridge (with a decent PDE stylus). The cracked cake top dustcover was also included. So I purchased it for $24.50 (already 75% off!).
Upon reaching home, I dusted it out a bit and tried to remove the inner sub platter so I could lubricate the parts inside, but alas, the rubber mat was so brittle that it all crumbled to pieces (so I discarded it)! And the sub platter won't budge anyway (with the C-clip removed). So anyway, I gave up and just decided to fire it up and see anyway. Well, it worked very good! No noises and smooth rotation. The auto cycle worked very smooth with almost no hint of sluggishness at 33 rpm with the full platter on! The changer mechanism worked fine too! Sounds awesome with the Pickering cartridge with no hums whatsoever. It has the lighter tracking tonearm than the Type A and the Pickering tracked well at 2g. It also has antiskating lever adjustment at the pivot. All I need to get for this is a record mat (original I hope). I am really tempted to keep this now but just don't have the space for it.

For the meantime, I also have a Type A that I bought before at the Bay for $50 which was also decent. It had a Shure M7D cartridge tracking at 4g. But I had to lubricate it, and refurbished the idler wheel (done by Terry) because the auto cycle did not cycle all the way through without stopping. Now it's perfect! Sounds awesome too!

Now I am at a quandry as to which turntable to keep. I like the Type A for its vintage look even though it tracks heavy at 4g with the Shure M7D.
But on the other hand, the A70 is more modern for a lighter tracking tonearm that would significantly give more life to my records.

Please help me decide :sigh:

Swap out the cartridges. You should be able to run the A-II at 2-3 grams if its running correctly. Or just keep both. The A-II is a better 78 rpm changer with that side-push mechanism.

You guys, you really want me to hoard turntables?? :D

Besides them, I already have a TD124, 1229Q, and a Lab 80 ... all in full use (not just for display).

Both have side push mechanism for changer.

That's why they put plastic covers on turntables, so you can stack them!

I personally would keep the A-70. From an appearance standpoint it looks better than the Type A plus it shares the same headshell as your Lab 80 therefore making cartridge swaps less of a pain in the butt.
The A-70 was a step below the Lab 80.
A friend of mine has the A-70 and I like it.

Honestly, I am more inclined with your choice too

I'm sure a platter mat will be found in the not to distant future --I've seen some come across e bay --not often but they are there.
Or sometimes you'll find a broken basket case A-70 with a platter mat and there you go.
I'm the meantime a make shift cork or felt mat should surfice for now.
Gook Luck---

Oh--One more thing --You have a first gen A-70 because the Garrard lion is grey(at tonearm pivot). The A-70 MKII the lion is red.

Do you have the manual spindle for it?------I MIGHT have one.

Just went back and looked at your picture....It appears the fold down record hold down is missing from your tower where the edge of the records rest on. Check another picture for reference.

Sorry for a barage of posts....

Really?? Thanks for that insight James.

I also noticed the auto mechanism of it compared to the Type A that it has a lot "softer" resistance especially when the "pawl" catches to sense the stack (that is the point where it usually has the hardest resistance that makes the platter stop during auto cycle). This one has hardly any resistance. Makes me think that Garrard also modified the auto mechanism (besides the light tracking tonearm). :thmbsp:

I don't have the manual spindle for it, so I just borrow it from my Type A. But if you want to sell yours, I'll take it :D

Ok --just went on E bay ---- There is the foam cushion (new) that goes between the mat and metal plater PLUS auto 45 adapter.
Looking at another picture the tower appears the exact same as your ,in other words there is no hold down clamp. HHHMMMMMM.
Maybe those were installed on the MKII A-70's.

If you can post a picture so I can compare ---I'll look and see. Take picture next to a ruler.

Yeah I saw that cushion, but what will I do with it without a platter mat? :D
And I already have the LRS3 from my Type A for 45 stacker. So I'm pretty much set once I find the mat :thmbsp:

I'd suggest saving it for when you do --- after all it is a part of the turntable. I guess it adds a little extra cushion.
