A bit of a project, but thank you Todd. Been itching to get my hands on a pair of these legends for some time now.

Purchased a pair of replacement Advent OLA woofers, already refoamed, and tested all the drivers. All but the super tweeter seem fine at first blush.

Plan is for a full resto: new wires, new caps, new cloth , new diffraction material to the baffles, and home made stands.

Hope to have them done before the next AK fest and maybe try them with Todd's Bose 1801 amp or some tube power.

FUN!

Redone OLA on the right, DQ10 on the left. they are damn near identical.

That looks like a VERY fun project! I hope to get a similar set someday. Look forward to the final result.

Sweet!

Man, every time I see those nude, I think about how those Masonite upper panels cry out for aftermarket replacements. Aluminum, hardwood, veneered MDF, almost anything would look nicer. :D

Looks a little better than mine did when they came home.

Super tweeter has a fuse, did you check that?

I found a bad solder joint in my x-over. I don't remember which driver wasn't working. After the fuse fix and joint fix, the sing!

it seems the super tweeter issues might not be issues at all.

some initial observations:

1) being a piezo driver, it won't register resistance on a multimeter. duh! i'll try running straight white noise tomorrow to make sure they are both working.

2) the "sweeter" plays above 12.5kHz, which i *can* hear on the left side (after fiddling with the fuse holder which was loose), but I don't hear the sweeter or the tweeter on the right side. The right tweeter has continuity so my guess is the caps are clogged up affecting the whole signal path.

3) i have no idea why people think these speakers don't have enough bass. they have plenty. the OLA woofers do well in that small enclosure and there's very little noise from the box itself.

4) the midrange is very nice on these. i can't wait to hear them with the high end fixed up and balanced.

5) all the capacitor values are odd. will take a lot of parallel caps to get to the values in the schematics. i assume that poly caps are perfectly fine for the lot of them. any ideas?

A few things: First congratulations! Second, thank God for the protective layer of dust, Third, Refoam the original woofers (I'll walk you through it) and and Lastly only use felt and preferably wool felt on the fronts of the baffles. Don't ask me how but it makes a difference.

Enjoy

Eric

they only came with one original woofer, so i bought 2 OLAs already refoamed so they would match. 90% of what i have read states they are exactly the same. and from looking at them side by side, they are pretty much exactly the same except the VC former on the DQ woofers is a different color.

as for the DQ woofer, i will probably refoam it and hold onto it for posterity or experiment with a ported enclosure for it to act as a sub. ??

so for a 6.5uf cap, i am stuck getting a 6 and a .5, right? i checked Mouser and PE and they have 6.2 and 6.8, but no 6.5....

since theses are mostly 5% tolerance, am I within range with wiring two 3.3s together for 6.6 total? it's a difference in frequency cutoff of about 100 Hz...

These guys might have a 6.5uF cap.

I'd check here too ...

And there's always Madisound ...

Baco. Could you please perform a diagonal hole to hole measurement of your Advent woofers? Thanks

installed. had them cranked to blow the cob webs out of the caps, and by golly, i think all the drivers work. the right speaker was missing the highs at first, but eventually chimed in. good glory these things can take some power. the mids are a bit too much for me, but i think the recap will even things out, if not i can taper midrange from my preamp.

and the bass is definitely THERE. i don't know what the nay-sayers are talking about regarding not enough bass. crazy talk.

only issue i might have with these is the size. they are very wide, and have ZERO appeal with the lady of the house. maybe negative appeal.

one of the top 10 speakers of all time according to some, so i hope they can match that expectation and stay here.

Theres a guy on my local CL selling a pair, he says to make an offer.
By the picture, they are in mint condition.
