Turntable spins in reverse

I have a Hitachi PS15, its appearance is beautiful and sounds nice too. Sometimes when you hit start it spins in reverse. Sometimes it doesnt spin. Sometimes it spins normally.

Spins at a good speed when it goes the right way.

I opened it up and looked, nothing obviously broken or worn, in fact this table seems like new inside and out, i would guess this is a lack of use issue rather than over use.

I have de oxit, but i didnt want to start spraying wildy...can i use it to spray in motors or in switches? or only spray it on terminals?

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?

Is it a queen one or dark side of the moon or something i am supposed to play in reverse? I could replace the needle with a little brush and this could be a cleaning 'feature' :)

backwards

Yeah- supposedly if you play the Mr. Ed theme song backwards at one point it sounds a lot like "sing this song for Satan"..... Somewhere I have the Colpix Mr. Ed LP - will have to check it out!!

if it is a direct drive turntable, one of the speed control IC's is going bad. I have seen this happen to a few turntables, they will be playing normally, then sometimes stop for a second, then spin backwards for about a half or two thirds of a rotation, then start going forward again. the problem will in crease ubtill the platter shakes as if its nervous. if a replacement IC cannot be obtained the turntable becomes a door stop.

Anyway, there should be a capacitor on the motor and replacing that might solve it. You should also clean any switch or other contacts in the drive circuit.

This is a synchronous belt drive turntable so the circuitry is pretty simple. I can't find a free service manual for you unfortunately.

Its belt drive. It never changes direction mid spin. Only when hitting the start button...giving it a manual spin and then hitting start seems to get it started most times.

The yellow one I think is a rectifier? its complete open, it doesnt even register as a circuit that can be tested...is this my culprit? Where is the best place to get a replacement?

Is this a snubber or a capacitor? Is this related to the direction of the motor, or can the direction be related to the big yellow bit??

CR01 and CR02 are phase shifter caps that have gone bad. Go ahead and replace C01 anti sparking cap for the main switch while you've got it apart and you should be good for another lifetime.

What you need are (2) 0.033uF / 350V polyester film radial caps and a 0.47/400V polyester film axial cap.
