Allied 435 Receiver

Acoustician

New Member
I've seen one posting on an Allied receiver, a couple of years old - so I'll start a new one.

I bought an Allied 435 Stereo Receiver as a restoration project. Its fully functional, (minus stereo beacon light) with stereo MPX kicking in on the appropriate stations.

I'd like to begin properly and over time, clean, polish, and tune any and all aspects of this. Its a project to do, not a "Rolls Royce", but worth doing.

The first step I think, is to track an operational manual, or schematic (set) and then get recommendations on cleaners, and a replacement stereo beacon.

Pots are noisy (expected) and the rocker switches are flakey but functional. some corosion on the back, and the inside, but there is wood case, and very few (if any scratches) on the faceplate.

in short, I know it can look and work better.

thanks,

JM

Welcome!

Looks like you are joining me in the 'Vintage Audio Rescue Project'... I love taking the obscure, or even mundane stuff, and polishing it up to a shine. My weakness are KLH receivers, but the low level Sherwoods, Pilot, and Akai catch my eye as well.

Looks like you have a pretty good specimen there...I just picked up a few immaculate Lafayette components (LR-100, LA-750, and LT-725A) the other day - for little reason other than they are so perfectly preserved examples of early 70s style and technology.

Another vintage piece saved! Keep up the good work!

i Have a Pilot 252 in need of some love, just cover shipping and it's yours. It's actually in decent shape I just don't have time to mess with it.

DingusBoy,

You are da man! I have one 252 pretty much functional, and another that has a channel down, so I would expect I could make a second functional one - which I'd love to do (more green lights brought back to life!). The first stereo reciever I ever fell in love with was the KLH 52 in '74 (I don't know why, but it just CAUGHT my 12 year old eyes and ears!), but the other main contenders on the shelf there at Best Products that I also lusted for were the Marantz 2240, the Pilot 252, and the Concord CR-260. As you can tell, my tastes run toward the more eccletic side of the spectrum...

Email me at pbgentry@alumni.clemson.edu and I'd be happy to do the deal. Thanks a million for contributing to the 70s Restoration Project!

re allied 453

I just know you are all going to freak out on this one...

Here's the deal, I had an old Allied that just rocked my doors off.
It was blown up by an idiot that didn't know what he was doing when I was away.

Now I see this beauty for sale, (and it's exactly the same model I had, a 453 and a reasonable price tag to boot.
It includies Allied speakers(with the strange plugs for the back of the receiver) as well.

I always loved this old amp but right at the moment I don't have the ...
Drum roll please...

Fifty dollars to go buy this receiver !!

So who do you think is the saddest individual on the planet right now ??

Many of those old Allied receivers were made by Pioneer. The 495 is one that I remember a little bit about. Those strange speaker plugs are the same ones that Pioneer used at the time. I think Parts Express still has them available. I will look through some of my old catalogs and see if I can find catalog pages for you on those receivers and post them as soon as I can.

I found it! Here is the 1971 Allied Radio Shack catalog (the small size thick red one. More Allied than Radio Shack) page scan. Interestingly, aside from the Allied 498 Receiver on the front cover and the Allied Model 1188 8-Track Record / Play deck on the inside cover, the Allied 435 is the first product that appears in the catalog. Note the picture of the Pioneer style speaker plugs.

There is another excellent thread on Allied equipment here: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=151315&highlight=Allied&page=2 . Check the link on post number 1 for some excellent Allied catalog page scans. Also, if you search for threads with "Allied" in them you will find a lot of good information. I will scan some of the pages that I have and post them in that thread. I think it will be easier for people in the future to find when they are looking for Allied information.

I owned one of those when I was Allied/Radio Shack store manager in 1971.
I traded it in on an Allied 395(I think that's what it was) because it had more power and maybe 1 more tape input/monitor. Both sounded great! I had Optimus 5 speakers and a BSR turntable with an M91-ED cartridge then.
The BSR had an aluminum platter, the model # escapes me. It was great system for the day.

What's the deal w/the speaker plugs on these? Am I going to have a hard time connecting my (bare wire) speakers to this receiver if I purchase it?

If you don't have the speaker plugs then yes, it will be difficult. I believe that they are still available through Parts Express, MCM, Mouser, or some of the other sources of electronic parts and components. They are commonly referred to as "Pioneer" speaker plugs. Off the top of my head I don't know who sells them but I bet that someone else will provide a link to where they can be purchased. Those Allied by Pioneer receivers were quite good so it will be worth the hunt.

He has one set, but not 2. Do you know if it's something I can get at Rat Shack, or will I have to look and order online?

Thanks in advance for any help. Am hoping to be able to restore/use this as my first pc. of Vintage gear. (I think the FM tuner light is out as well.)

It still amazes me, the depth of resources on AK, and how quickly information from long ago can be made available.

Very cool, Ultra-Hog.

That scanned catalog from one of Ultra's earlier posts was quite a thing of beauty to behold! :thmbsp:

Didn't see the 435 in there, but I'm hoping I can get enough help off of this forum to get both speaker outputs functional, and ultimately, to fix the aesthetic part by replacing the bulb for the FM tuner.

I'm such a noob at this I'll probably be too scared to try it.

I doubt that RS has them available but they may be available on auction sites too.

If you are trying to replace the lamp for the FM Stereo indicator be very careful to replace it with the correct lamp. If you choose one that draws too much current you could cause some damage to the tuner circuitry. Panel illumination lamps are somewhat less fussy.

Here is a "borrowed" picture of the connector:

I think it may be both, but not sure yet. I called it the wrong thing for the one I KNOW he said isn't working, and your term panel illumination lamp is what I meant to say. I can't remember now if he said the FM Stereo indicator is out or not. I'm assuming this is the one that lights up (usually in red) to show when the dial has hit an FM Stereo station.

Either way, good to know. I think my "lil buddy" might be sending me some links where I could get replacements for either, and much thanks abound!! :D

Picked it up, but no chance to plug it in and check it out yet (still at work). Sounds like it is BOTH the panel illumination lamp, AND the FM stereo bulb that are out. :(

Not even sure parts can be had, but it would be nice to at LEAST be able to fix the panel illum lamp.

I'll post some pics later, just cause I'm into that sorta thing... and I'm sure I'll need some help, fellas!
