I respectfully disagree. The Roman numeral system never subtracts 11 from 100 to get 89. I think the author of the webpage in your link is wrong.

I must admit that I did think it a little odd that the arithmetic description (on the website) includes 2 minuses in series to achieve the result. And that your version looks more 'familiar' to me. I will defer to your judgement with the thought "don't believe everything you read on the Internet"
