<$100 Speaker Challenge!

11somekid

Part-time Lunatic
I currently own a very imbalanced speaker setup. On top, I have a pair of B&W CDM-1 SE's, a very nice bookshelf speaker worth ~$400. On bottom... a pair of Magnavox Balancer series that I found for $4. I probably need to fix the latter, so riddle me this: what is a decent pair of floorstanding speakers one can find easily for double digit pricetags? CL is slowing down, and I see more fibreboard excuses than anything else at thrift stores.

If it helps, my current receiver is a Scott R-316 @ 20WPC.

Thanks!

( I was also throwing around the idea of selling/trading the B&W's for at less capable, but still nice, set of bookshelf speakers AND floorstanding. Is that a plan?)

I just paid 75.00 for KG4. Effiecient floorstanders which would mate well with 20wpc SS receiver. Any older EV horn loaded speaker like Esquire or Sentry II. Genesis & epi as well.

your near ashville and charlotte. Both lots of stuff to be found there.. Just looking in asheville CL found Paradigm 5se MKIII for 80.00 and Minimus 7 for 20.00. Also Sony STR-4800SD for 15.00 which puts out 35wpc! Charlotte CL has Dahlquist M905 for 100.00 as well...

There is a pair of EPI 200b's listed on Charlotte's craigslist for $100 (no affiliation) that I would suggest if the drive is not too far for you. The only issue I see is that one of the woofers might not be original.

Keep an eye out for some Sansui SP-2500 or SP-3500, these will rock your world and don't cost to much.
It appears that there are several Sansuis available at a $60-$70 range. Someone is selling both a pair of SP-2000s and SP-2500s for $100 total! No grills, though. I might get one of them, if they last long enough to convince my dad for the drive (or a car!)

I would look at those Paradigm, I have a subwoofer from them that is very good.
I might, but they might look a bit...off in my setup. Even my B&Ws have a natural wood look, so I might continue that. It's really tempting, so if the Sansuis don't pan out or the Paradigms lower in price a bit, I might jump on it. Perhaps I could wrap it in woodgrain contact paper!:rflmao:
If you were closer, I would fix you up with a pair of speakers and a receiver of some sort.
I got a few distand relatives in Cleveland, maybe I can take a trip to OH!

Paradigm>Sansui. I would take minimus 7 and a cheap sub over most Sansui speakers. They have a couple of gems but unlikely to find under 100. Also str-4800 for 15.00 is a scroe.

Cerwin Vega floor speakers (two)
