1060 Amplifier

I guess I can live with it. I usually turn the volume down before I turn off any amp/receiver anyway.

I gave it a good listening to tonight, and I have to say that the sound has definitely improved. The mids and the highs seem to be much more defined and the low end has more grunt. The jury is still out on the phono section. I played a few LP's and It was OK but I think It could do better. I didn't change out any of the transistors in the Phono section (or the preamp board), so I might give that a try next. So far I've only replaced the Electrolytic caps and the power supply diodes.

Next step, The Wood Case.
 
I found this same integrated amp at a yardsale, for 15.00 6 yrs ago, one of the best amps I've ever owned!!!!!!

Well I finished the Re-Cap (using bktheking's recap list), and adjusted the Power Amp section according the the service manual. So far I have one issue. When I turn the unit off it continues to play until the amp becomes unstable and distorts as the voltage drops. The size of the main filter cap was increased to 10000uF from the stock 4700uF. Do i need a bleeder Resistor across this cap so it will drop out quicker? Or is this just the nature of the beast.

The Conclusion

Well here she is all recapped and look'in pretty with a refinish job on the wood case.



The sound is just amazing.
It has a certain sweetness to it that I just can't describe.
I had planned on using this as a preamp for my Carver M-500, but when I hook it up to the Carver all the sweetness disappears. It sounds good but just not the same.

This was a really fun project and the amp was really easy to work on.
The reward was an amplifier that I will keep and enjoy for a very long time.

I have to say that right now I'd have to rate this as one of the worst amps ever produced by marantz - or at least my model - recapped and serviced it still sounds strained, unnatural, underpowered and anything but sweet.

Perhaps you need more efficient speakers, my 1060 (and 2230) sound fine with my 91dB speakers in a moderate sized room.

It's actually one of the best small integrated amps ever produced. Can I ask you a question? How many units have you redone? If this is your first and it's now having issues I can bet money that you made a mistake somewhere along the lines, if you didn't redo it maybe your tech made a mistake. Instead of coming on here and complaining about how bad it is why don't we as a group come up with a solution to fix your 1060. It's not the cap combination that is causing the issue- that list has been used by 25 people to redo their units- your unit is the FIRST one i've ever heard back on that is having a problem. Would love to help but the negativity towards the restoration needs to stop.

Your not doing anything to help yourself out, this is guess work. I will post back on your post to try and come up with a solution, you need to take measurements and figure out where the issue is.

May we have some pictures? All of us who made recap could find mistakes on boards just looking at fotos.
 
OK guys I don't mean to be negative but after so much effort it's difficult to accept the frustration. In sure everyone had had great success with their recaps and I'm sure that this particular amp has a problem though what that is I don't know. I am desperate for a solution - not only because of the money and time invested but because I have to leave this in there hands of a techie and feel kind of helpless. Yes I can solder and if you guys can help then I'm happy to do the work myself and persevere.

Tomorrow is my over free day from work and I'll take fotos and see if you can spot anything. I'll hand it back to my techie for testing as I don't have the tools to do this. When her hands it back to me I asked if he'd checked bias and DC etc and he said he'd only checked clipping.

Bear with me - I don't handle disappointment or defeat too well grrrr

OK - I am now in the twilight zone. You will say this is impossible but it's true.

Just a watching a movie I know well through the amp - The Simpsons movie (yeah I know). Well at one point (through the 2215b) a particular dialogue is always spoken through the right channel. With this amp it's through the left so I figured I'd switched left for right on the inputs - so I swapped them over - still through the left - so I plugged them in through the tuner rather than aux and still through the left - again i swapped left for right and still the signal is the same. How can this be?

In another scene Homer is on a wrecking ball swinging between a rock and a hard place - sound should follow the swing from crash to crash right to left - left to right for a good few swings - on this amp, no matter changing the inputs the signal is permenantly reversed and cannot be changed - holy cow - how can that be?

I remember that when I got the amp the balance control worked in the opposite direction - and likewise didn't respond to changing the inputs. When I got it back from the techie I asked if he had fixed the balance control so it adjusted the right channels - he said that he hadn't touched it as for him left adjusted left etc - which it now does.

How and why the blame knob resolved itself I have no idea - how and why the amp plays he same left and right signal regardless of orientation is beyond me.

Could this be the cause if this amps poor performance?

OK - hang my head in shame - my mistake - I was switching the wrong inputs - time to take a chill pill and try to stop worrying about this thing - sorry guys - I'm a dipshit - be gentle with me I have just fine 12 hour shift!
