1229Q Start Lever Does Not Return To Rest Postition PLEASE HELP

Hi everyone, I have a Dual 1229Q turn table that has been working perfectly over the last couple of months. But as of last night the start/stop switch is getting stuck. What I mean by that is if i push the lever into the start postion the tonearm rises and it goes over to the record and drops down. After that happens the start/stop lever is supposed to go back to the middle. Mine is not doing that it is staying in the start postion and will not go back to the middle postion. When this happens I can here a sound as if the lever is trying to go back to the middle position but can't. If l lift the turntable up on an angle and press the start lever it does not get stuck after it drops the needle the start/stop lever returns to the middle position. If I take the record player off of the angle and put it down flat the start stop switch will work one more time and then if I do it again it gets stuck. If anyone here has had a similar issue or knows whats wrong with mine please let me know. I know alot of issues on these old duals are caused by dried up old greese and I know thats what a lot of people say to do so if you are going to tell me that please tell what parts exactly I need to clean and relube.

Welcome to the AK turn table forum.

Clean and re lube only the parts that have been previously lubed.

You should be able to differentiate them from parts that are totally free of grease. :)

You can use the service manual as a guide.

Thank you for the reply! hich parts exactly should I do that to? I'm still confused about what is causing the start/stop lever to get jammed in the start postion and not go back to the middle position. Here are some pictures from the service manual.

Yup, you have dry grease. It is hard to explain what to do. I would remove the platter and then remove the 1229Q from its wood base. Look underneath where the start lever is. Follow the rods and levers, looking where there is old grease. I use cotton swabs with denatured alcohol to clean out this grease. I use lubriplate. Also, go over to Vinylengine and get the service manual. Sorry for the poor explanation. It easier to do the service than to explain it. Hopefully someone can explain it better than I can. Not a hard fix. Welcome to AK.

Thank you for the reply! I will try that as soon as I get home and I’ll let you know how it goes.
 
As suggested go to VE and get the service manual, also there is a DIY service guide. Download and read that as well. It explains what needs to be done to get them working once they are in the state yours is. It likely is dried grease, but the spring that returns the lever loses tension as well and with the slightest bit of friction it will not return the lever and causes it to stick.

What do you mean with the slightest bit of tension the lever won’t return?
 
Consider the picture you posted, the levers rotate and lock into the notches. Normally this is lubricated and slides freely. Once the mechanism cycles the spring pulls the lever back to center. Even if the lever is lubricated there is still a small amount of friction. If the spring is weak it cant move the lever against the friction freely enough so it doesnt return to center.
 
Dont necessarily need a new spring, but make sure it has plenty of tension on it. I stretched mine to get more tension on it. But yes if the grease is getting dried out it needs to be cleaned and relubed. If things are not moving freely when they are supposed to then the mechanism wont work properly. Think of it as a clock mechanism, everything has to move freely at exactly the moment it is supposed to for things to function properly. The slightest bit of extra friction or lack of tension things dont move properly.
