12at7 rolling

12AT7 - 12AU7 - 12BH7 ....

Those are vastly different tubes! No wonder they sound different in the same circuit, if working at all. One must not come to misleading conclusions when substituting tubes at random. (A 12AU7 would hardly work anywhere near the correct operating point in a circuit designed for a 12AT7.)

Then also (not desiring to rain on the parade), if the tubes came from an old stache, in all fairness they should be tested for specified conductance before coming to a conclusion. Thus not blaming you for experimenting - unlikely to cause damage here - just cautioning against deciding on a brand for all the wrong reasons.

Just to be clear, I'm using only 12at7 tubes, tested on my Mercury tester which was compared to two known working testers at my tech's shop, so no weak tubes tested.

I'm using a totally subjective method by which preference is rated by willingness to change for something else. The Tele and the Bugle Boy want to stay in the amp. Others don't. I really admire the detail of the Tele, but seem to like to listen to the Bugle Boy.

I only have to please/delude myself with this exercise.

I'm listening to Dvorak Piano Quintet in A with Arthur Rubinstein and the Guenari Quartet, one of my favorite chamber pieces, and the Stereomour is stunning in it's realism. I sit and try to pinpoint sound coming from my speakers. I can't. Sound apears to be coming from left of the left speaker all the way to the right of the right speaker. No other amp has done this that I've owned. They all sounded good, mind you, but this is the first amp to make my speakers disappear. The wide dispersion of the horns probably contributes to this. I read about this but never experienced it.
