Hello,

I have an amp that uses 4 -12AX7/12AX7A. I was wondering if anyone has a source for inexpensive tubes? I only need 2 of them to be fairly good, the other 2 are for the phono stage that I do not use(I use a receiver for phono stage),they just need to be there. I just need tubes to test this rig out. I plan to buy good tubes once the finances allow. For now I just want to give it a listen. I am new to tubes, and must say I am very addicted.

Any info is appreciated.

Hi tuttle,

First off 12AX7s are very common. If you add your location to your profile locals might see it and be able to help you out or point you to local resources, maybe even loan some, don't know.

Secondly, if you are an AK subscriber ($25/yr) you get access to a couple additional forums, Barter Town (BT) being one of them that members can post wanted and for sale post. It's a great resource.

Thirdly ebay or other such sources is where I have gone to supply them.

You could get you a couple Sovtek 12AX7 LPS tubes from any tube vendor (I use Antique Electronics Supply, AKA Tubes and more). I want to say they are around 10 or 12 bux each and are very nice tubes.

Or part out an old Baldwin and you will have a lifetime supply. ;) Seriously these tubes are one of the most common out there. For the phono you might want to spring for some of the low noise variants. If I remember right 7025 is one.

Yep, lifetime supply of low-microphonics from junked Baldwins. Used, but most are very low hours, and likely Sylvanias.

I was happy dealing with Virginia Tube Audio, which was an AK sponsor - not sure if they still are. Anyway, small company, good service.

When I was in your position I started out with the Sovtek LPS, that's a good starter tube IMO.
