1964 PHILCO Console

jsarsfield

The Pioneer Pirate
Hi there is a 1964 Philco console available in my area for $50

The ad says this

"1964 PHILCO HIGH-FIDELITY STEROPHONIC AM-FM RADIO-PHONOGRAPH
MADE IN CANADA
45YRS OLD RADIO WORK GREAT RECORD PLAYER NEEDS SOME ATTENTION
SOME LIGHT SCRATCHES ON TOP
MANUAL INCLUDED"

My question is, Is this a tube console? Is the unit worth $50? and what are the opinions on Philco I haven't heard much about them and I've never owned a tube amp beside guitar amps. Thanks in advance

64' is a maybe year.

Even if it is a tube console, Its probably a combination chassis by the look of it, which means no stand alone amp inside.

$50 isnt bad but $30 is more like it.

Go check it out!

Yeah I was only thinking about pulling the amp if it was a tubular.
I guess I'll keep on searching thanks

Not trying to hijack this thread, but there is a 1963 philco console in my area which has an L-1679-123 model number on it.

does anyone know what the amp configuration would be in that? I'm debating on taking the 90 mile drive up to see it, but I'd like to know what's in it before I make that decision. Back pannel says 120V, 60cps, and 120 WATTS!!! I know that includes radio and turntable - but how much power can those really require.

make 'em an offer

Looks like it could potentially be a good tube amp :thmbsp:

As long as you are willing to possibly sling some solder to install new capacitors this could be a good investment.

I have now done 3 of these, a Viking (Canadian SE 6BQ5 Console), Fisher Electra E-49 (PP 7189) and just this week a Magnavox 8804 (PP 6V6). They all work and sound great after some basic electronics work.

Have paid from $ 15 - $ 35 dollars for the above, suggest you make offer.

ps - if not, I will be in Sarnia this Friday and if you PM me the information would be pleased to buy it if you are not interested

I passed on this one...

Thanks for the information, seller was quite nice but this is not for me

Not point to point wiring, uses PC board instead, tuner and amp on same board.

Also uses amplifier tubes I am not familiar with (25B5 or something similar, forget exactly).

I have one more rebuild (4 of 4) to finish before spring so maybe it's better...

...

It sounds like a "hot chassis" design. No power transformer, making all of it hot with powerline voltages. Not good if you wanted to feed it external audio sources.
