1965 Sherwood stereo console info

Thanks for letting me join hopefully you can help me ...
I have a Stereo Cabinet I love very much made for Sherwood components, it is in the 1965 Sherwood catalogue I have, but no other info is included . I’m thinking its a fairly rare unit, and I would love to understand who designed it for Sherwood, and when .. I have not found another anywhere other than in the catalogue … Any ideas or advice to track info down would be appreciated .. The SherwoodUSA site is no longer working as of yesterday ... Thanks for your time on this ...

Hi James, and welcome to AK. I'm not sure, but I'd guess this information has been lost to time. Sherwood has been under Korean ownership for decades, so I can't imagine they'd have records from 50+ years ago.
 
I cant help with any information but it sure is a cool piece. Definite mid-century vibe. First time I've ever seen one like it.
 
Does the cabinet have any thing that identifies it as made for or by Sherwood? Reading the catalogue about the components it suggests that they can be fitted to your custom cabinetry, which I believe that is what you have. Someone either made it themselves or commissioned a piece to replicate the advertisement in the catalogue. Either way, it is a very cool piece.
 
Is there a built in turntable or reel to reel deck? Usually consoles came with a TT in my experieince.
 
This is a custom furniture console. Which was common in the 1960's. A Barzilay or similar cabinet arrangement. Not a factory built console from Sherwood. Back then Fisher and the last Ampex consoles were the main remaining factory built high end consoles. Sherwood did have that cabinet pictured in the catalog then but it was not offered as a factory console offering. And this was built when Sherwood was based in Chicago, Illinois. Inkel of Korea bought Sherwood in 1975.

Thanks but no it’s a piece that Sherwood commissioned it’s in their catalogue in 65, 66, and 67 ... I collect MCM and this is other level design and carpentry .. definitely professionally done and not DIY .. I just figure someone out there has another one and they can tell me something about it ..

Thanks yup that’s what I think as it is in their catalogues for late 60s though without any sort of explanation... It’s super beautiful
 
So, you have the Sherwood audio components and that gorgeous console for displaying them?
Nice combination! What is behind the closed door(s)? Record storage? Turntable? RR Tape deck?
Any idea what speakers are in the outer sections of the cabinets? How long have you owned it?
How does it sound?

Just bought it off a collector in town .. he removed the Amp and Receiver from it and used it as a piece of fine living room furniture .. but he kept everything including the stereo equipment manuals .. the unit does not have internal space for components other than the opening in the front .. my thoughts were the turntable and reel to reel would reside on the top .. inside there are files for records and supplies .. I have it coming in a month so I don’t have the paperwork with me .. Speakers are intact and were working when it was purchased 5 years ago from original owner .. I will refurbish it when I get it ..
 
I have seen plenty of S-3300 tuners and S-9500 amps (what is the model on front of amp? )but this is the first time I have ever seen that console. They do show a picture of it in catalog so its not a custom piece. Whatever you do PLEASE DO NOT PART IT OUT as you have a really rare console and it deserved to be kept whole. It absolutely has to be worth way more kept whole then its worth parted out. If I ever seen one local I would be all over it.
 
Well if he did pull the tuner and amp they are easy to find just search on S-2300 or S-3300 for tuner and S-9500, S9000 or S-9900 for amp (also 'a' suffixed). Get it back as original as you can. I have a S-3300 and S-9500 and they are no slouches and easy to find. Or if you really want to step it up you can upgrade to tubes with S5000 and S3000iv or v, I am pretty sure they are same dimensions.

thank you and no worries I am keeping it intact and adding an appropriate turntable when it’s ready .. I paid $2500 Canadian because I love it and I’ve never seen anything close in quality of cabinetry .. I like like it more than the Clairtone Project Gs which I had a G3 in the 90s .. really happy

So the Previous Owner (PO) already gutted it? What a shame.
Good on you for putting such a classic back together!
I think a lot of homes don't have the space for such a large elegant piece of audio furniture!
