2 speed marantz recorder

Picked up for free a Marantz model SD 3000 2 speed(1 7/8-3 3/4 IPS)Has Dolby and Compuskip?.On back says Chatsworth CA.Everything works in playback and record mode but the FF and REW buttons don't lock in although they both work when buttons held down.Can anyone help me with this as well as any info on the deck please?.......Thanks .....Rick:scratch2: P/S It is a Cassette PLAYER. Got the FF and REW buttons to work properly but not sure how Compuskipbutton and record mute button should work or more like how to activate.....................

I have an SD-4000. It has 3 heads instead of two. Nice deck IMHO. The FF/Rew should lock, except in play mode where they work as cue and review in which case they don't lock. The compuskip will make the deck click when cueing or reviewing to indicate silence inbetween songs. You should get better performance when recording at the higher speed. Not many with this option. I think that the record mute button mutes only when depressed. When you release it, it stops muting.

I have the SD-4000, in two versions. One is the ordinary version, the other is factory-labeled as an Esotec unit! I've also seen (and posted a link to it at the time) ONE other "Esotec" SD-4000 posted for sale at auction in Japan. These are the only two of this version I've ever seen/heard of. It is pure speculation, but I'm guessing that Marantz marketing people felt the need to have an Esotec cassette deck to match the rest of the Esotec line, so they rebadged some of these.

The higher speed makes an audible difference in sound quality. You need to go to a very good deck, like a higher-model Nakamichi, to equal or better the sound quality of your Marantz, when in good shape and operating at the higher speed setting. It's just better physics! :yes:

Not sure how to fix the problem you speak of, without examining the gear up close; mine did not have that problem, so I've never encountered it.

I'm not familiar with exactly what it could be not causing the Rew/FF to lock, but I've seen where alot of these mechnical mechanisms have some type of metal piece connected to a spring that moves into place to lock the levers. Probably something as simple as some dried lube causing a part to not move or move sluggishly.
