2000x compenent connections

I've got a 2000x and like it, but it has two Phono and one Aux connections. I'm assuming the turn table I have isn't compatible with the older phono connections because I get horrible sound when I connect it to anything other than the Aux. This is kind of a pain because when I want to connect my laptop or any other device I have to manually move the connections.

Since I'm new to the vintage stuff, why won't my turn table work on the Phono connections? Is there something wrong with the Sansui, or are they different standards? The turn table is a Sony unit I bought new about a year ago.

Thanks!

The aux input doesn't have RIAA and the sensitivity is far too low for a MM cartridge. The only way to get a better sound using aux from a TT is if your TT has an old fashion ceramic pickup which I believe you don't have. :D

I guess that the phono stage is faulty or not getting voltage. First of all clean the selector switch with Deoxit and see if the problem disappear.

A one year old sony tt, might have line level outputs to connect to modern ht receivers that dont have a phono in. My guess is the sony has a some sort of phono preamp(if you can call it that) and the output voltage is too high to input through the phone preamp in the sansui. Tape "in" or "play" would be very similar to the aux as rob stated, just use one of them.

If not get a input selector switch from somewhere. Radio shack sells them(overpriced), I alway pick them up at good will when I see them. try to get ones that have manual switches on the front, some of the automatic switchers(so i've read) that are a/v won't switch with just audio conections.

Check your owners manual for the sony and see what its output current is, if its something like 1.5 to 2.5 volts its "line voltage" and need to be hooked to aux or tape input...if its in the mV range it should work with the phono input.

Hopefully you didn't fry the phono stage (if its line voltage) when you conected it to phono......

That's the way it must be. I didn't thought about it. The Sony TT is probably equipped with a built-in RIAA Phono amp to match modern amps without phono input.

You got it. After reading your post I remembered selecting a switch that enabled it to play through my yamaha which didn't have a phone input. Changing it back to "off" allowed it to work!
