2000X -vs- 771

Well this Sansui madness all started because I'm demo-ing my buddies newly acquired ($20 thrift store find) 320A. I have my Sony PS-X5 hooked up and am powering a pair of Marantz Imperial 7s. It sounds great...a very nice improvement over my old mid 90s Yamaha unit.

Now I've got the 'sui bug and have found a 2000X and 771 both relatively local and reasonably priced (don't know if I'm allowed to post the price here, but the 771 is a little more). They both seem to be in great, functioning condition, but I haven't demoed or seen either one in person.

I like the 320A but it's a bit little and it's not exactly mine to keep. I would also like to have more input and output options. Given my setup, is there one you would recommend more over the other or just general comments/information about either model that would help me in the decision.

I really dig the looks of the 771, but that's not really what it's about...just an added bonus.

Thanks for any comments!

Phillip

My father used to have a 771. it's a really good amplifier. it has the Sansui "sound", that I'm used to hearing. It probably would still be in use if the output transistors hadn't decided to croak, which was probably an isolated case.

However... just about everything in the *000 series sounds outrageously good. I'd go for the 2000X, but if that falls through the 771 is still an excellent receiver.

The 771 shows obvious cost cutting.

Huh? Cost cutting on the 771? Not sure what you mean by that. I've got one I use daily for the last 2 years and it sounds mighty fine. No exp with the other unit tho but any of the 771 or mates will do you right. Decent power and that Sansui sound too!

Cheers,

Bob

I've had both, still have the 2000x, recently tried to buy another, gave the 771 to another member.

I used to have a 771. I really like the 2000x better I think. You must buy both. AK Law: Sec. 12 Para. 5

I have both--the 2000x is on my computer desk, and gets daily use.

The 771 sits in the basement, and doesn't get used as much. But that has as much to do with the size of the units as how they sound. I like them both; still need to get bulbs for the 771.

You won't go wrong with either of them. Or even better, both!

And I have Imperial 7's too. They sound great with either receiver.

I actually picked up a Marantz 2230 instead. I paid a bit more than I would have for the 2000x, but I'm happy with it.

Congrats! I've owned both of those models and I actually prefer the 2000x. Don't get me wrong, the 2230 is a fine sounding receiver but it doesn't have enough power to get speakers going. The 2000x doesn't sound as constrained.

I have both and i think I can agree with that statement.
