2014 Albums - Bests, Bummers, and Fazed Cookies

Oh I know that, I read your posts @ everywhere here, not just the Soul thread.

Cool brotha. You know, I would assume that your interests are all over the place but I just don't see you anywhere other than the soul thread so I associate you with it. Same way I am associated with the jazz list. We have been pigeonholed into our bit roles Mystic lol.

Some good stuff out there but the only new release that I had to get was:

LAKE STREET DIVE BAD SELF PORTRAITS

I will check it out Bob. I am always happy when people are living in their own time, and supporting great artists who are delivering the goods. Whether its one album or several is unimportant. So tired of the people who complain about modern music. Not sure how somebody can be a music lover and yet not support anything being made now! Its my impression that most of these types don't have access to fresh modern music, or don't know how to find the correct avenues to arrive there.

I get around here & there.

Rosanne Cash's The River and the Thread is quite good, on par with her previous Black Cadillac. I saw her and her band (including husband John Leventhal) at Lisner Auditorium in DC last Valentine's Day and it was one of the best concerts I've seen in a long time. I went to the show (somewhat skeptically) at my wife's request and it far exceeded expectations.

The Best category is too hard for me, though that Run The Jewels record that poppachubby pointed to is a scorcher (my wife winces, though, when I put it on). Grouper's Ruins would probably be up there, along with Caribou's Our Love.

So, these are my favorite reissues:

This was probably the best new music I heard in 2014. Dumb cover and all... Can't wait for the full length.

Oh, man. I didn't know this came out. I loved their debut from last year. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm digging the Ghost of a Sabre-Tooth Tiger release "Midnight Sun".

It's a Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp-Muhl joint. Good band well-written psych-pop.

I bought a lot of music this year, but not very much of was actually released in 2014. Two standouts that were:

Opeth - Pale Communion - This one completes their transition from metal to prog, and I like it a lot

Richard Thompson - Acoustic Classics - Just RT and his guitar, this one perfectly captures his solo in-concert sound. Great songs, great guitar.

Year's about to end, so here are Ken's picks for 2014. I'm interested in your picks too.

Best Albums of 2014:

#1 - Brian Jonestown Massacre - Revelation

I keep going back to this one. Anton has a new studio, but BJM is still your lo-fi friend. Gritty riffs, techno, and stream-of-consciousness, composer-savant art from the torn asunder heart. This is up there w/ BJM must-haves Take it from the Man and Their Satanic Majesties Second Request. Every song is a winner. "What You Isn't" is now my personal anthem/mantra. Make it yours.

Biggest Let Down of 2014:

Beck - Morning Phase

Wow. This sounds great. Mellow even. What cool effects. I'm bored.
This one is the opposite of a "grower." The more you play it, the less you want to hear it. So dull, I no longer want to listen to Sea Change.

Just picked up Brian Jonestown Massacre - Revelation have not listened to it yet.

Have to agree about Beck - Morning Phase but I do still listen to Sea Change

Best album for me: Warpaint - Warpaint
WOW. This album is absolutely fantastic. .

I have to agree with that statement and thanks for turning me onto them.

That Richard Thompson disc is great!
