Anybody who has read my posts about my 2021 VW GTI know that I got hit in the drivers door when it had 1500 miles on it. In the weeks before it happened I just had a feeling something was going to happen and it did. Never did shake the feeling that it was a bad luck car. On the interstate a couple of months ago a big chunk of semi tire tread popped from under the car in front. With traffic all around there was no dodging. I was lucky that it was laying flat but it still put a crack at the lowest part of the fascia.

Been looking to replace it because of the things above and a few other sniggling things plus the dogs crate ate up most of the room and just needed more room. Saw the dealer had a bunch of the Taos come in and it looked like an end of the year sale possibility. Checked with dealer if they had the market adjustment rip-offs and they said no. After perusing their stock I picked out a white SE. Showed up on Tuesday and and a rental company bought the white ones. While we talked they dropped the price by a 1000 off MSRP. Test drove a black one optioned like I wanted. Back from the test drive I said I'd take a white one when the got one in. Sale manager said if he came back with even more off would I take the black one. Told him money talks. He comes back with another 1000 off and a really good trade value for my GTI. Was able to get 2.5% from my credit union so wound up with a payment almost 150 less along with owing a lot less. Another plus is Kentucky has a temporary reduction of sales tax. It was a pain trying to wrangle the dealer and credit union but finally got it done. Car dealers don't like missing out on their financing kick backs. Triple black just like the GTI. Took a 900 mile round trip to Illinois and back with the car only having 80 miles on it. Got 39.2 on the way up and 37 on the way back doing 73mph. I'm sure I'll see some trips of 41-42mpg. The VW app keeps track of all the stats which is pretty convenient. They call it a subcompact but it's a dang big subcompact with amazing amount of room in the rear seats. It's a very comfortable all around car and the dog likes it too

I'll post a picture once I get it washed.

Sounds like the twin to the one we bought in January. We love it!!

I've had it for a week and it's a very comfy ride but it's got the same issue the GTI had with USB thumb drives with music affecting the radio. It would come on but with no sound and neither the volume knob or steering wheel volume controls worked. With the GTI you had to pull the thumb drive and restart the car to get it to work again. At least with the Taos you can pull the thumb drive and cycle just the radio. The 2019 Sportwagen had a SD card slot and there was never a problem with it. I think there are a few people out there with head unit problems that they haven't traced back to using a thumb drive. On the GTI it also shut off blind spot monitoring till the USB was pulled. I even tried formatting the USB with fat32 and exfat neither solved the problem. Guess it's time to use an old phone and Bluetooth for music.

I got the slight upgrade of heated seats, mirrors and steering wheel along with the wireless phone charger and garage door opener.

If not using the radio we are doing AMHD from a phone. So far zero issues with that doing calls, txt, nav and AMHD.

Considering cars today this is a plain-Jane vehicle and I'm enjoying it so far

Here's the pictures I said were coming.

My daughter bought an SE like yours in November (it's gun metal metalic) My wife was so impressed she got a white SEL a week or so later. She traded in a 2021 white Jetta that we liked, but it was pretty small. The head unit on the wife's has needed a couple updates, but it has been trouble free otherwise. We took it on a thousand mile round trip vacation a couple weeks ago- averaged about 34 mpg and it is very comfortable. The wife did most of the driving and she does 78 or so in a 70 zone.

That doesn't look plain Jane at all, and compared to the Korean offerings it's pretty classy.

It does have that VW Germanic style. Myself I have always liked that look. I came close earlier this year to buying a KIa plug-in hybrid but after reading all the problems Hyundai and Kia are having with their 4 cylinder engines I'm glad I didn't and then there's the whole no immobilizer car theft debacle.

I should ad, both the daughter's and the wife's Taos are the AWD versions with the 7 speed auto trans- heavier so not quite as thrifty as the 8 speed FWD version. Still pretty perky for a 1.4 litre turbo.

I believe they only come with the 1.5 and yes it's a massaged 1.4. I had the 1.4 in my 2019 Sportwagen and VW did a great job upgrading the engine. The Taos has more spunk and is smoother the the Sportwagen. The 8 speed tranny is smooth and it really helps 4 cylinder engines, also like it better than the DSG. The DSG wasn't bad by any definition but the 8 speed is my preference. Have had 3 cars with an 8 speed and they were all nice. All wheel drive is pretty consistent at cutting 2mpg from it's FWD sister cars spec. It's surprising how easy it is to turn the front tires over.

Congrates ! Sound like A good deal on a good car !

Compared to the Golf/GTi MK7, the Taos is meh outside (this is despite that the MK7 looks very reserved and almost simplistic), and its tablet-based dashboard is double meh. At least it is not as horrible as the Mk8 Golf/GTi. It seems that if works better for you, so who I am to judge. Congrats!

I've heard that the amazing fuel economy of DI engines bites back at about 60-100K depending on driving style.

It does. BTW, when the Civic 10th gen came out, I hated it for its Transformer-derived style, but then got used to it and actually started liking it. Compared to it, the latest 11th gen car looks as boring as cars looked in 1990s.
