Is anyone going to watch the race this weekend? I know this forum doesn't have much interest in endurance racing, or at least very few post about it, but I figured there might be a few that follow WEC or IMSA.

I'm stoked! Tomorrow there is free practice then more free practice and qualifying on Thursday. Looking forward to it. I'll watch as much as possible, which should be all of it.

How does one watch the race here in the US? IMSA puts all their coverage on their YouTube channel a few days after the race but I don't know about WEC coverage here.

I don't follow IMSA and WEC like I used to (although I was at the IMSA race in Monterey about a month ago and every previous year since 2012-ish and at Le Mans in 2016.)

But if it's on TV here, would be fun to tune in now and then and check progress.
 
The 24 Hours of Le Mans
Race Start: Saturday, June 13, at 10:00 AM ET / 7:00 AM PT.
Race End: Sunday, June 14, at 10:00 AM ET / 7:00 AM PT.

It USED to be aired on the Velocity Channel/Motor Trend/whatever-in heck-they call it now. (Discovery Turbo apparently)
In the past we'd record the whole race on the DVR and watch it afterwards as time allowed.

but that may HBO-Max in the UK, not sure the US version will do it, and my TIVO Romeo won't DVR a streaming channel.
 
I subscribe to WEC's streaming service, and have through the last 10 years or so. I'm not sure where to watch it on another streaming service or TV, but it looks like Heather has that covered.

Peugeot missed out on advancing to Hyperpole qualification. They just didn't have the pace. They've been fairly competitive this year, so this is surprising. There are 18 cars in the Hypercar class this year. Only three don't advance to Hyperpole qualifying - the two Peugeots and the winner from last year's race, a Ferrari. The thing is, that Ferrari didn't qualify to advance last year either, but they won the race. Qualifying at the front of the field doesn't really provide much of an advantage in a 24 hour race.

There will be more qualifying tomorrow.

Penske didn't bring his IMSA Porsches over for the race this year. The Hypercar field is strong so racing will be competitive anyway.
 
IMHO Le Mans in one of THE events on the motorsport calendar. I could add the Monaco GP and on your side of the pond the Indy 500.

It just "is" because of the history, kudos etc. etc. Maybe it's because it completely flies in the face of the current "I want everything NOW" mentality. It's about skill, endurance, teamwork, overcoming setbacks etc. etc. and shows up the real character of those involved.

Well, I just subscribed on HBO-Max via Amazon for a month (I had just turned it off for Summer June 3rd!) so I'll check this afternoon for Qualifying video and such.
I do get F1 via Apple TV and yes, Monaco F1 is one of the highlights we make a point to watch each year.
I have friends that got me interested in F1 back in the day - I wasn't interested to the degree they were (I never went to Watkins Glen)
but in the early 80s we went to the 2 real F1 races on the streets of Detroit - Big fun!
 
I don't usually follow endurance racing but Le Mans is pretty special.

It will be available on something called truTV and I'll monitor the race although the weather here is kinda crappy and there may be more TV time.

Just an FYI. For Spectrum cable users in the LA area. TruTV is 775 (HD). I have the race starting at 7am LA time on Saturday, 7/13. And ending 7am, Sunday. With a one-hour post-race show.

Strange as TruTV carries World's Dumbest, Family Guy, and Reality-TV type shows. No car racing or other sports. :idea:
 
After I switched on HBO/Max today via Amazon, I checked it this afternoon and saw many links for WEC via HBO - Practice/qualifying/etc.
looks like the race proper is 5PM Sat to 5PM Sun here in the East Coast.
There was some kind of awards ceremony going on for various classes when I watched (about 4PM Thurs) -
but - Rew/FFW/Pause were not allowed - realtime viewing only (streaming).

Looks like the WEC YouTube channel is what I remember: features and highlights but not actual race coverage. I see you can subscribe directly to WEC for about 50 Euros and year.

OTOH, IMSA provides everything free on YouTube but after the fact.

I saw that TruTV was listed as streaming it. Excellent! Glad to see some will have access. I asked Gemini about that, and it claimed that only the beginning and the end of the race will be on TruTV when it reveiwed scheduled programming. TruTV and HBO Max are owned by Warner Bros. HBO Max will broadcast the entire race -- as I said, according to Gemini. Anyone planning on watching on TruTV might want to verify that.

The team of commentators that FIAWEC put together are pretty good, but I'll be listening to Radio Le Mans instead, with John Hindhaugh. John and his team are the gold standard for endurance racing.

I set the DVR from 7 am Sat through 7 am Sun. So I either get the race or 22 hours of Family Guy.

I have a proxy server on a Amazon VM in Ireland that I had to use in the past. Apparently Warner Bros or whoever owned the rights to the US broadcast and the FIAWEC stream wasn't available to those of us in the US. I'd fire up the VM on race days and watch that way. It's a bit of overkill, but it worked and I never had any issues.

Do you use this to view F1 races? I don't have Apple TV. Kinda sad, first year I've missed all the races, in a long time.

I know some guys at work use a VPN or DNS to follow F1. I guess that I'm not that interested, either — to go through the hassles.

Though it is nice to keep up with the newest F1 stars.

I agree. They also cover the IMSA races (except the live NBC coverage). They (not the NBC guys) are on the IMSA YouTube videos of the complete races posted a couple days after the races. In 2016, I took a Sangean pocket FM radio and earbuds to Le Mans. The entire race was broadcast on FM there with no commercials. Had JH in the earbuds while wondering around the place. JH was also on the PA at the Laguna Seca IMSA race last month.
 
I think if you VPN for F1, you have to get an IP address in England and then subscribe (and pay for) Sky Sports coverage. Not sure how you pay Sky Sports with a US credit card. I hear you need a local to pay the bill for you. I guess something similar in other countries with local F1 coverage.

I do like the SkyF1 coverage which is available on Apple TV (if you dig for it). I used to watch F1 on ESPN (which was the SkyF1 coverage). I needed some type of cable service to watch ESPN (even though I used their streaming ap on my AppleTV box) and I really don't watch much else on cable. So now I've dropped cable and just have AppleTV, which is a lot cheaper for me since I dropped the cable.

But AppleTV provides no method to DVR the coverage and while the races remain archived for later on-demand, the pre-race stuff (practices and qualifying) disappears in a couple of days. I watch all the pre-race stuff but now it's a PITA to get to it in time. I also liked watching SkyF1's post race "Ted's Notebook" show which is not now available at all in the US (verified when I emailed Sky about that).

I didn't know that. Did they cover the entire race? I don't have TruTV as one of my favorite channels to scan, so I can't keep track of what shows they have.

We'll see about LeMans this weekend. :idea:
