2218 Cap Question

Hey All,

Re-capping a 2218 and have everything except the 6800uf 35v large caps, I do have 10,000uf 35v leaded caps. This unit doesn't appear to have an independent filter cap and it looks as if the amp and power supply share the same wafer board. Are these 6800uf 35v a form of filter cap for this unit and if so, can I substitute the 10,000uf 35v caps for the 6800uf 35v without affecting the sound? Thanks Rich

Yes, these filter the rail voltage to the amplifier. I doubt you would notice any sonic difference with the 10000uf, but I would buy some good quality 6800uf.

Sal, The ones I have are Nichicon KW's 10000uf 35v leaded and they are perfectly spaced for the board. Thanks Rich

They will work, but keep in mind that with increased capacitance their is increased strain on the rectifiers. The inrush current will be sustained longer. I'm sure their is head room as far as current rating on the rectifiers, but I would probably get the 6800uf anyway.

Ok, so I went ahead and order the 6800uf 35v like the originals. I would beef up the rectifier if I was savvy enough to know where it is and what it does, but since I don't, I put in Nichicon Fine Gold leaded caps for the filters. The unit is finished and sounds very nice with good bass. He is the pics....
