222 to 555

I’ve really been lucky. I was able to get an AU 555. It had a stuck power switch. No problem, easy fix. So in the meantime I find an AU 222. It’s in great shape. So, we swapped out our AU 217, which is a sweet amp. Love that amp.
2 minutes with 222 and the 217 was sitting on the 2nd string bench.
The 222 is special. For 18 little watts. Oh my AND damn. Simple, clean little box that gives me goosebumps.

In the meantime, as I’m loving the 222, we were able to get the power switch on the 555 repaired, it got all the adjustments, didn’t need recapping. Brought it home Saturday morning. Only real place was to swap out the 222. Actually felt my stomach sink a little as mrswakka took it away for the 555.

Wow, the 555 really delivers. I mean, this thing pushes hard. It really pushed all my buttons right away. Good looking too. It’s definitely not a plain little box.

I’m using them on a pair of DCM Halftimes with the Doubletime sub. Both amps really work that sub. Had it on a AU 717 and it sounds better on both the 222 and the 555. The 222 probably the best by an angel’s kiss.

Note about all the black on black, if you have vision problems like me, it can be difficult to see what’s what at first. I was having trouble figuring out the tone controls right? 4? wtf, 4? Alexa tells me what’s happening, wow cool. And the first thing I thought of was, wow, whoever designed this series of equipment really meant it. Right?

So, of course an AU 999 shows up. The equipment show that is California is worth the cost of admission. The 999 is pretty rough, missing the feet, 1 knob and a couple of switch covers. But it is fully functional. It obviously needs work and some love. Mrswakka calls it wealthy uncle of the family.

Don't forget the AU-777.
 
The 777A (or 777D JDM model) has historically been raved about as one the finest amps in the series, and this era of Sansui in general. I've not owned or heard one myself, but based on past posts here, it is preferred over the "straight" 777.

Then again, the 222 has more recently emerged as one of the "golden amps" that seems to have praise universally heaped upon it. A few years ago, it flew almost completely under the radar, as was once this case with most of the smaller, lower power models. So, clearly preferences and opinions have shifted over time.
 
I’ll keep an eye out. The thing about the 222 is that it’s this unassuming little box, then you turn it on. It’s crazy good. I’m thinking it might sound great on a pair of KLH 23s.

This is the AU 222. Got it from a guy in Las Vegas. Mrswakka kept trying to give him the money. He kept telling her about the amp. Mrswakka is getting a little irritated. He finally handed it over. I tell her later, it was killing him to sell that.

Our Sansui AU 555. Bought from an AK member. He posted, mrswakka was there within the hour! I like the tone controls. You can hear it instantly when it’s where it needs to be.

Mrswakka likes driving, what can I say?
Both of these 2 are truly great amps. The 222 is my favorite by a slim margin. Like I said a plain little box that gives me goosebumps.
