2220b, a new dilema

I have bought a 2220b recently and plan to rebuild it.

This is what's puzzling me.

In the service manual for the 2220b there are two 6800uf filter caps. In every image I can find online there are two 6800uf filter caps.

My 2220b has two 2200uf and one 4700uf filter caps. :screwy:

Has the world gone mad? Can someone tell me why my receiver is different? Was it near the change over from the 2220 and the 2220b? Can I expect more differences from the manual and my receiver? Is there a Guru out there that knows these things?

This is what I thought too.

The balance is a slider but has all the whistle and bells of a 2220b.

What is your serial number, you may have an early unit, and they added additional value. I have seen it before.

Yep, definitely a 'B'. I kinda wish I had the B, currently repairing a 2220. The manual does indeed show two 6800uF caps for the supply and I dont see another large cap. The std 2220 has one 4700uF cap for the single rail design, and two large output coupling caps. The B design has an improved power supply and outputs are direct coupled due to the split rails +/-30V. Also I see an FM demux IC which the 2220 does not have. You should trace what the 3 caps are wired to. Maybe we are all looking at the wrong schematic. Its always possible that someone replaced the caps (and I'm not seeing the other big one). Also found an error in the B schematic. They show one of the 6800uF caps wired with the + to the negative rail.

Sorry for the late update here. I have got home late every night this week. But today I had a few goodies waiting for me. I am going to try something Like Pat Font did.

The 2220b will wait a little while cause I got my caps for my 2225 today and I want to get started.

What I did was ordered caps from parts connection, digikey, and mouser. I think I got them all.

Here is the different part. I also ordered a complete rebuild kit from Irebiuldmarantz just in case I missed something. Has anyone used one of those kits? Are they any good?
Anyways it really looks complete. It has new power switch, a new relay, all LEDs needed for conversion, and even pre cut disfuser paper for meters and dial. I do see a lot of panisonic caps in the mix. There are some audio kt and nichicons throughout the kit as well. Sure I missed some because the kit has more than I ordered. The panisonics will land in the trash unless someone wants them. Panisonic is a very well made cap but I really think they lack in the areas of audio.

I ordered elna silmic II, elna cerafine, and nichicon es for non polar. Also two 25mm clamps.

I will install the kit first then I will install what I ordered and let you know what I think. If the kit rocks I will be pleased for what I paid and what I got. I have just as much almost in the caps I ordered.

Covers off and ready to go to basement workbench. She is a dirty dirty girl. Going to take quite some time to clean.

Anybody know where to buy a faceplate? Maybe one of those black ones. :scratch2:

Ok. Once again I am sort on time and tall on work.

I installed the caps I got from I rebuild Marantz on just the tone amp, power supply, and power amp boards. I let them play into dummy loads for 48 hours at 1/4 volume.

They sounded ok. The power was there and that soft Marantz sound was there but not full on Marantz.

I will leave the power supply alone now with the caps that it has. A mix of Nichicon, Lelon, and Panisonic. Since the kit came with a new power switch I will put that in.

I have all the Elna silmic II I need to complete the power and tone amp. Time to get started.

I think I might order Elna cerafine for the lower value caps on the tone board for crisper highs. Any thoughts, anybody? FYI I listen to classic rock.
