2230 Power Switch

Looks like the power switch on my 2230 has called it a day. The button will not click and stay in position for power on, it simply is pushed back out by the spring.

I have not looked in there yet, but I should be able to replace. Or, can it be fixed, if not are these available anywhere, I looked on the auction site and noted some power switches but wasn't sure if they were straight change outs. Any input/thoughts appreciated.

I just got a 2230 with a bad power switch also. The PO had it permanently jumpered it closed so that you would need to use an external on/off switch like a power strip or something.

However, I fixed mine. You may be able do to the same.

Open up the receiver including removing the bottom. Remove all the knobs and 4 corner screws holding the faceplace on.

Remove the headphone jack since it's in the way and blocks access to the power switch, there are 2 screws in the front and watch out for the little spacer/stand-offs that are behind the little plate.

Then remove the metal button/knob on the power switch, remove 2 screws and work the switch out.

you can either cut the 2 wires and re-solder them later or just work with it connected. PLEASE make sure your receiver is unplugged.

The switch is open on the back and you can see the contact and metal parts., I used a sharp jeweler's flathead screwdriver to scrape the carbon off the contact points and Q-tips soaked in De-Oxit to clean the insides - there was a lot of carbon build up from the arcing. Also, I cleaned and lubed the mechanical parts of the switch.

All that build up carbon is what causes the hissing, power fluctuations and sticking. My switch was bad on my 2220B also and this fixed that also. This took 15-20 minutes and I was up without any problems. If you're up to it you may want to try this. Good Luck!

Good news, but Also Bad News

OK, got to switch, all went well, but button was stuck on shaft, gave it a little tug after verifying with another button that it easily pulled off the shaft. Unfortunately, shaft broke :--(. I guess after 40 yrs, the plastic got a bit brittle.

So, now I need a switch, mine has 4 lugs with 2 wires soldered across a pair of lugs and a capacitor (does not appear to have polarity) on 1 pair or lugs. Swap out appears straightforward, just need a switch, would like to wrap this up soon. I guess I need a button also, unless I could carefully drill a hole in the shaft and extract the remnant (yeah right). Any leads/thoughts appreciated. Also sent Dgwogo a PM per earlier post, maybe he'll have something.

dgwojo has a replacement switch and cap....

IIRC the 2230 used an 18mm mount spacing.

email is usually quicker than PM from him

You can reuse the old button by carefully drilling out the old shaft with a small drill bit. Don't drill too deep. Once you initially drill the first hole, graduate up to a larger bit and drill out the old broken shaft carefully without damaging the slot on the cap. And then on to the next larger bit...until you can pick out the remains with a jewelers screwdriver or pick. It worked for me.

Ditto on dgwojo. I bought a power switch from him for a 2270 and it fit just right using the old button by utilizing the method as described above.
