2235 and 2235B Master/Slave

Hi All:

I've tried all kinds of variations on this theme but I'm still not satisfied with my solutions.........

Here's the issue:
Marantz 2235 has a CD player and an iPhone as inputs - connected as Aux and Tape 1 respectively. This receiver is powering a set of AR3's

Marantz 2235B has only a set of Bose 901's connected to it.

I have tried using the "Pre-Out" on the 2235 to the "Main In" on the 2235B with the Bose EQ box in the path - but there is no functional volume control on the 2235B in that configuration - so you can't balance the speaker outputs between the two.

I have also tried using the "Pre-Out" on the 2235 to the "Aux In" on the 2235B with the Bose EQ box in the path. While this works, any tone adjustments made on the 2235 flow thru the Bose EQ box and into the 2235B - which is problematic since now you have to adjust the tone controls on the 2235B to your liking which kind of defeats the purpose of the EQ box.

What I really need is an output on the 2235 that is unaffected by the tone controls that I can run thru the Bose EQ box and into the 2235B - but I can't seem to find that combination.

Perhaps I'm over-thinking this - but if anyone has any better ideas please let me know. The Bose box is causing me some grief and I'm not quite sure how to run conventional speakers like the AR's together with the 901's at the some time - seems like you can only use one type or the other without playing a lot of games.

Thanks much!

The instruction manual describes two methods for inserting the EQ in the signal path. It can be connected between the Pre Out and Main In jacks. Or it can be connected as would be a tape recorder, using the Tape 1 output and input. I believe the latter method will give you the option of adding the EQ to the signal path, or not, using the Tape 1 Monitor button on the front panel of the 2235B. And you will be able to connect your second input source (iPhone or CD player) to the Tape 2 inputs.

The 2235B is the better choice because of the second tape inputs. The 2235 will not be needed at all. AR speakers on Main, Bose speakers on Remote. Engage Tape 1 Monitor depending on which speakers you are using.

You will be able to play both pairs of speakers at the same time. But they will both either have or not have the EQ in their signal path.

Google this for a link to a PDF of the original manual:
"installation and operation - bos e 901 stereo speaker system"

Go to page 3 section V for instructions on setting up the EQ like a tape recorder.

Thx for the reply - yes I reviewed those instructions - still I can't quite solve my issue. BTW, the 2235 also has 2 tape inputs. It's identical feature wise to the 2235B - except the 2235B has one additional meter.

The solution I'm looking for is a "pure" signal out of the 2235 - not influenced by the tone controls (so "Pre-Out" isn't an option) or input selection - into the 2235B - but with the ability to control the volume on the 2235B.

The closest I've come to this is 2235 "Pre-Out" --> Bose Box In --> Bose Box Out --> 2235B "Main In". While this works, there is no volume control on the 2235B. All sound output is dependent on the "Pre-Out" signal from the 2235.

I know this sounds crazy - but so is that Bose box. I like the way the Bose sound but that external box sure adds a level of complication if you want to run the Bose 901's along side conventional speakers like the AR's.

Connect the 2235 Tape 2 Rec Out to the AUX of the 2235B.

Yes - that seems to work nicely as long as you're only using Aux on the 2235. The problem I'm running in to is that I run an iPhone into the 2235 "Tape 1 in" (which I get to play by pressing the tape monitor switch) and a CD player into the 2235 Aux jack. So in the configuration you mentioned above the CD player works great - but when I press the "Tape Monitor" to use the iPhone as an input, the signal does not come out of the "Tape 2 Out" jack.

I was able to make everything work as expected by running "Tape 1 out" from the 2235 into the "Aux" of the 2235B. In this configuration, the iPhone was in the "Tape 2 in" jack of the 2235 and the CD player was in the Aux jack of the 2235. However, the iPhone produced significant "bleed" into the Aux channel which bothered me. In other words, when you ran the iPhone and selected "Tape 2" - you still got a low level distorted signal on the "Aux" setting.

I've tried reversing the 2235 and 2235B and checking the same setup - the bleed between "Tape 2" and "Aux" occurs on both receivers. If I run the iPhone into "Tape 1" and the CD player in "Aux" there is no bleed at all.

I'm about ready to say "uncle" and realize that maybe no configuration is really going to work

It seems simple enough - capture a "pure" signal from the 2235 for all Input selections (non preamp influenced) and send it to the 2235B - but I can't seem to make that happen

Well - I got this to work and I checked with the repair tech I use to see if anything I've done will damage anything..............

He said not to worry about the bleed that the iPhone produces between "Tape 2" and "Aux" when it is playing. He states that this is quite common (and it happens on both my 2235 and 2235B equally). Just make sure the iPhone is disconnected or turned down when you want to play the CD and vice versa.

So in the end it went:
2235 --> CD in "Aux", iPhone in "Tape 2"
2235 --> Tape 1 "out" --> Bose Box In --> Bose Box out --> "Aux" on 2235B

Seems to work fine
Thanks for the ideas
