2270 Dial Pointer

Re strung my 2270 dial pointer, now it doesnt want to go far left.

Also station / pointer indication is off. string routing is correct.

the diagram for re string shows placing the pointer to the left. How far to the left all the way ? Is there a procedure written

Have you glued the pointer onto the string yet?
If the pointer were to be removed will it move throughout the band?
If so then tune to a station in the middle of the band and then place the pointer on the string there.
Then see if this helps.
Or if the tuning is backwards from the pointer then you have the loop around the thumb wheel wrong.



Be careful and turn off the unit and unplug it before putting hands around wires.

Did not change the string, the pointer is glued as it originaly was. just came off the pully and now re installed, looped counter clockwise 2 x per the diagram

The diagram in the copied service manual I bought for my 2275 is wrong. The loops need to go clockwise. Like Oerets is asking, does it tune down the band as the pointer goes up and vice versa? .02
 
If the AM and FM are off the same amount, tune in a strong FM station of a known frequency for exact center tuning. Then loosen the set screws securing the drum to the tuning capacitor and set the pointer to the correct spot on the dial, then tighten the setscrews.

I will try to wind the string in the opposite direction left to right 2 turns. instead of right to left that the sm diagram suggestes.

Is your copy of the 2275 manual in pdf ? I have a 2275 to, no sm.
 
Great copied the 2275 from the data base.

Will try winding the cord clockwise and see what happans. this is crazy. may have to visit my brother in law and look at his 2270 to actually see the cord. No one has a picture of 2270 cord routing ?
 
Don't know if this will help or not but it's from my 2270 manual.

Yes I followed that diagram, the pointer will not travel between the entire span of the tuner. Have you used that diagram ? Is the cord winding counter clockwise correct ? I can get it to tune but not the full span of the dial. the gyro wheel will move the pointer left when tunred left. and right when turned right
 
I don't have a 2270 but the diagram provided by jef105 shows that the 2270 and the 2230 (which I have) are similar.
If the pointer for your 2270 will not travel the entire span of the dial scale the dial cord may be slipping or the total travel span is being restricted by the dial pointer hitting the sheet metal to the right of the dial assembly or the loop ferrule to the left of the dial pointer is hitting the small pulley on the left of the dial. If the travel is restricted, the problem is due to the position of the tension spring loop on the main dial pulley for the variable capacitor as shown on the cord routing diagram inset. Patience is the key in resolving this as the apparent loop caused by the tension spring will need to be shifted along the dial string until the overall travel at the "0" to "100" logging scale is realized. This may take several attempts before proper travel is accomplished.
When I first finally successfully rewound this string drive mechanism I had to resort to unfastening the steel hook - string loop to the left of the dial pointer and perform the following steps:
1. Grow two additinal arms/hands.
2. Tape dial pointer at the "0" logging scale indication.
3. Route string to right of pointer around two small pulleys and tuning knob making sure there are 3+ turns on it's shaft.
4. Rotate large pulley until the variable capacitor plates are meshed / fully-in.
5. Route string over the pulley and run through slot to the tension spring loop.
6. Pull free end of dial cord to place tension on the spring and wind two additional turns around the pulley.
7. Maintain tension on the cord, route through last small pulley and refasten the free cord loop to the hook to complete the circuit.
8. Untape the dial pointer and rotate turning knob from end to end to verify travel is from "0" to "100" as indicated on the logging scale.
9. Do again for drill.
 
Also I think (after reading your instructions three times) having the tuning capacitor in the fully in position and the pointer string at 0 is key.
 
It sounds like 12J5 has got you on the right track.
I have never restrung the 2270 but I have had to do so on my 2325.
Have patience and you WILL get it :thmbsp:
It probably took me 2 hours to figure it all out and I finally just started from scratch and never looked back at the diagram in the SM.

I was running out of patience and I think, the more I looked at the diagram, the more confused I got.

Make sure that the string is tight enough, if it slips any at all it could go in one direction but not the other. You can push on the string giving it some tension and see if this helps any.

Went through the process again, with the tuner gang closed, pointer to 0, routed the string and could not travel the entire scale. seems like it runs out of string when moving to the right. ( spring stretched out ) Stumped
 
Try moving the gang to the middle of operation , then loosen the set screw on the wheel and adjust the needle to the middle. Tighten up and see if this helps any.
