2270- question for owners

Hey guys, nice board!

I am looking at a 2270, never had a marantz before, and was wondering about the performance at 8/4 ohms as I have read conflicting statements. I have 6ohm speakers, will they be OK?

Also, is it worth getting these things with updated internal components (eg replaced relay, that sort of thing)?

Please gimme any info you guys have on this thing, it looks to be a beauty! Thanks.

Welcome to AK. The 2270 ought to be able to run 6 ohm speakers w/o overheating. While opinions vary, I'm of the "don't fix it unless it is broken" school. This applies to everything except vintage speaker caps with me (they wear out and make the sound "wooly").

Learn to use the search function and you will be able to clean the 2270 yourself and even check and adjust the DC offset. These are basics that even a non tech like myself can handle.

If the unit has been "upgraded," everything depends on WHO did the upgrades. Generally, the fewer hands that have been inside the machine the better.

I am quite a fan of the 2270.

I own a 2270 from Echowars and I couldn't be happier. You might want to see if he has any on the bench. You won't be disappointed!

man these things are expensive. 300 bucks and they aren't mint, not even unscratched. I wish I could find someone who has taken care of one and just get it that way. Public auction is so expensive.

They are worth the money.

They will run a 4ohm load no problem if they are operating in spec.

It is my most beefy 70wpc receiver for sure.

Pics of it and it's competitors.

Like I said, beefier for sure, and acoustically awesome.

I do not think you will have any issues with the 6 ohm speakers.
The 2270 is one of the more popular Marantz receivers, hence the higher price tag.
I own one myself and have been very happy with it. It was about $300 off the auction site back a few years ago. I was lucky and found a local seller so I was able to look it over first and pick it up after I won the auction. All I had to do was polish the exterior, cleaned the controls with Deoxit for good measure, and replaced a few lamps (replaced all of them while I wan in there). Been enjoying it since with no problems or regrets.
I did dress it up a bit by adding a wood case. I bought a less popular Marantz receiver with a nice case. I cleaned up the case and put it on my 2270. I then cleaned up the other receiver and put it back on the auction to recover some of the costs of the 2270.
I think you are going to like a 2270. They have a great sound to them and look good.
Just ask the seller whatever questions you need and request additional pictures if needed to justify the money you are going to spend.

I almost made the mistake of selling my 2270 after getting it almost perfect on eBay. The auction topped at 350 and I decided to keep it. This is my third 2270 and they are worthy of their reputation. Very tough and well built. I had it hooked up to AR 92 4-ohm speakers and it sounded great. Now it drives Bose 901 and I really have to watch the volume or the speakers can bottom out. The 2270 has a certain sound signature that I like better than all the other Marantz I've owned. It is close to my 2230, but richer. I'd say they are worth the premium. Now I am looking for Motorola output transistors for one side as that is the only thing I've not been able to find. It has the Fairchild used in the later series. A very nice receiver indeed.
