2270 running 4x 6 ohm speakers?

Hello AKers!

I have a question about running two pairs of 6ohm speakers on my 2270. I currently have a pair of awesome JBL 530s with my 2270. I love these speakers so much that I purchased a second pair. I’m about to move this system into a larger room and want to use all four 6ohm 530s at the same time on my 2270. Am I playing with fire? Can this damage my Marantz?

I would get an equivalent power amp (140 maybe?) and run a Y cable from the preamp output back into the 2270 and to the 140. You can damage your 2270 running these in parallel.

Two 6 ohm speakers in parallel (what you get when you select both main and remote speakers) results in 3 ohms. Too low for your amp. Don't do it. Take ocdecio's advice above.

Thank you very much for the clarification. I thought there could be an issue but didn’t realize the parallel situation until now. GREAT advice from the AK experts once again.

So, I am a bit of a collector (umm. Hoarder) and happen to have another 2270 that is just waiting to be part of this party. We’ll see. Maybe four speakers in a 12x12 room is overkill.

Get two RCA splitters and connect them to the Pre Outs of one 2270. Then run the splitter into the Main In on each 2270 - one for Left and one for Right. Volume control would come from the one you tapped into the Pre Out.

Just to describe the splitter connections a little better, remove the Pre Out and Main In jumpers from the back of both units. On the unit you want to act as controlling unit, plug an RCA splitter into the R and L Pre Out. Plug one of the "outs" of each splitter into the matching R and L Main In on the same unit. Then plug the other "out" of the splitter to the R and L Main In of the second receiver. Connect speakers to the MAIN speaker terminals on each unit and select them. Now when you play music, it will come through all four speakers, and control (volume, balance, etc) will come from the controlling unit. You need two Male/Male cables with a little length to reach both receivers -- something like this:

There may be a price to pay in sound by splitting the Pre Out signal. Whether that would be audible or not is hard to say.

For me 4 speakers of any kind in a 12x12 room would be serious over-kill.

But then again I've never been unhappy with my little 35 W/c Sansui R-5 in a 20x12 room either.

I'm not so sure about that... The type of person who would want to run more than one pair of speakers at the same time is probably not best served by having their output power cut in half (as a result of series wiring increasing the impedance). Really, the only benefit of using more than one pair at the same time is if you want to listen loud (which requires power). Otherwise the extra comb filtering, etc, isn't worth it, and it's better to stick with one pair at that point. I say that as someone running 3 pairs of speakers using 6 amps in the same system.

Yes, absolute overkill for that tiny room, but I can't get enough of these speakers. If you haven't heard the 530s you should. I have owned many speakers and mostly have large format JBL-types, but wow! These 530s sound amazing. It's like the sound travels right through you.

It will be my home office and will mostly run vinyl. Because of the space I won't be running it very loud, I just imagined being completely engulfed in audio awesomeness with four of these. Two will absolutely fill a room, probably much bigger than this, but it sure sounds fun to give it a shot, eh?
