2285b lost chanels

Title17

I have a 2285b, and for the past year or so I have been dealing with the right and left channels taking turns working, initially the left speaker would cut out, now the right and left do, but usually at different times, it is very frustrating because when it is working 100% it sounds excellent.

Are there common components of failure on these? and how possible is repair to them, I am not afraid of replacing caps, resistors etc.

...it could be the speaker relay, but before you dig into the receiver, check the pre-out/main in connectors on the back. Simply connect them with a (short) cinch cable, maybe this solves your problem

are you experiencing a scratchy sound as well when moving the volume control?if so you may just need some deoxit like mine does.

i purchased some de-oxit last weekend, and used it on both my 2275 and 2285b . made zero difference on the 2285b, however it did help my 2275 a whole lot.

any other places to start troubleshooting?

I don't know what the internal layout of your 2285b is but if it is similar to my 2385 you may find that one section of the main selector switch is nestled neatly ahead of the tape monitor/copy pcb and isn't accessible from behind. Mine spent literally months in and out of the shop over the course of about a year and I finally dug into it myself and found that one section was dry as a bone. Everything else on the switch assembly had been obviously cleaned and lube but that one section was missed. I ended up removing the whole assembly and gave it the deoxit treatment and now I have 2 channels all the time. You do have to at least partially remove the faceplate to r&r the switch assembly but it may help to get that section cleaned if you have the same sort of layout.

once again another update, I did try bridging the main and pre-amp no difference, sometimes it will work for awhile then cut out, come back in whenever it pleases.

I know this is going to sound a bit crazy, but when one of the channels is out, give it a good rap on the top with your hand. If it comes back on, it's the speaker protection relay. Just had to replace the one on my 2270. :D

Welp, I am now enjoying pure stereo again, Thanks for all the advise guys, but in the end it was my own stupidity that caused much of this, my speaker wire was not sufficient, I finished replacing it a few hours ago and its been bliss ever since, this is the best my 2285b has sounded in months!
