2385 Distortion

My 2385 is working just fine. Then a couple days later I put on some music and the left channel speaker is just a bunch of broken up distortion. I switch the right and left speaker connections on the back and now the right speaker sounds like total crap. Obviously, something went bad on the Marantz. I will have to take it in for a check up. I am very disappointed. I had been using my Pioneer SX-1250 and swapped over to the 2385 just a month ago. I really like the 2385 over the 1250. Any suggestions on what the issue can be?

Check to see if the headphone output is also distorted on the L channel. Is it distorted with all inputs (AM, FM, Phono, Tape)? Also, it could be a dirty volume or balance control that needs cleaning, or the speaker Main switch is dirty, or the relay contacts are bad.

Well, I have already replaced the Marantz with the Pioneer. Those things are heavy! Everything sounds good. I did check the balance control on the Marantz, and it definitely something internal to the Marantz, The Left output just suddenly crapped out. I am getting sound, but it is all crumpled-up sounding, similar to a blowm speaker. A lot of vibration and distortion only from the left channel. Oh well.

Check to see if the switches in the pre/main jacks on the back have gone intermittent. This can cause distorted screwed up sound. Just jumper between them with a dual patch cord (eliminating the internal switches), and see if the issue is resolved. If so you can spray a small amount of contact cleaner/lube into the jacks, and plug and unplug an RCA plug several times to clean them, or just bypass the switches all together with jumpers (like Pioneer)

I recommend this here occasionally and it frequently will clear up such issues.
Operate all the pushbuttons and rotary switches, one at a time, several operations each with the unit on at low volume. My 2385 will clear up after minimal monkey business just operating the switches, maybe yours will too. Good luck!
