23xx series pecking order (opinions sought).

"Everybody" (here!) knows that the Marantz 23xx series consisted of these basic models:

  • 2325
    [*]2330
    [*]2330B
    [*]2385
with further variations related to faceplate color and Dolby functionality, and the last two digits denoting "wpc +100" RMS output.

Now to the more subjective (and therefore harder!), but also more interesting, question: Apart from RMS wpc output, what is the pecking order of the 23xx series in terms of build quality, sonics, and availability of components?

In short, if WPC did not matter, which Marantz 23xx would you choose and why?

Thanks for any thoughts.

All the best,

I like the face of the 2330B and 2385, but I like the internal layout of the 2330 and 2325. Sonically, I can't tell the difference from memory between the smaller three, haven't gotten to play with a 2385.
I guess I would pick the 2330 due to it's rarity and ease of service (and I have one), but I would like to try out a 2385, one of these days.

I own the SMALLEST of the Marantz receiver's.....the 2010.
10wpc and HALF the size of my Marantz 2230....it is still built like a tank and can drive reasonable efficient speakers (like a pair of AVID 100's) with almost the same Marantz signature-sound as it's larger siblings.

I've always lusted after the 2330, or 2330B. With a slight edge to the 2330B.

Those would be my dream Marantz receivers. For anything larger I'd want to go seperates. But it looks like I'll just need to be content with owning a 2285.

My every day unit is the 2385 running through either a pair of JBL L100's or a set of Bose 901 VI's. without a doubt my favorite piece of gear. Oh yeah..in a wc-124 case and has a DLB-1 decoder even

Nice, Rcriss!:thmbsp:

So with regards to the cab, I believe the following cabs fit the following models:

  • WC-124: 2385, 2500, 2600
  • WC-123: 2325, 2330, 2330B
  • WC-122: All 22xx
Does that seem right to you guys?

IIRC the "1" designation indicates that the cab is a 3 piece ie: wc-122 compared to a single (solid) cab such as wc-22. I think the wc-23 fits the 4400 also (been a long time since I needed one lol)

It just dawned on my that when I said "122", "123", "124" in my previous post, I really meant "22", "23", "24". I won't edit the post to in order not to make the flow of the thread meaning less, but this is what I meant to say:

  • WC-24: 2385, 2500, 2600
  • WC-23: 2325, 2330, 2330B
  • WC-22: All 22xx
Does that make sense now?
