24/96khz vs 24/192khz dac in a cd player

"These go to 11"
Audible difference in DAC's?

I have a Philips DVD 711 from 2000 with a 24bit 96khz dac. How much of an audible difference could I expect to hear compared to a cd player with a 24/bit 192 kHz dac?
I ask because I'm thinking of swapping out a JVC XL-F207 (1993) cd player with the 711 as opposed to buying a newer cd player with a newer dac. If the sound quality is significantly close I'll do the swap and save the money.

I'm no expert, but from my experience, you'll have a hard time noticing the difference based on frequency numbers alone.

However, that being said, it doesn't mean that you won't be able to tell the difference from player to player, because there's a whole lot more to CD sound than the frequency numbers of the dac. The quality of the dac and the components following the dac in the audio stream can make a big difference.

Try it out. Swap out the Phillips for the JVC now and see if you can tell the difference. Decide which one to you sounds better.

Now, if you're asking if you can find a newer CD player that sounds better than the DVD player, the answer is "yes" if you are willing to spend the money.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I think the Philips will be better than the JVC but I will have to try it out. I think you're right about the other components of the unit contributing to the sound quality. Time to experiment!

Try it out. Burt from my experience, the DAC chip and type alone mean nothing.

The actual design of the digital circuit supporting the DAC chip and the first stage analog amplifier circuit are 10X more important than the particular DAC chip used and the bit size or sampling rate of the chip.

Agreed ... it's not all about bit rate.

I much prefer the sound quality of the USB output of my Maverick D1+. That tops out at 96/24, but the Tenor chipset just sounds a whole lot better than the coaxial and optical, both of which can do 192 ...

Short version ... whatever blows yer hair back ...

My Geek Out 32-bit / 384kHz USB DAC is way more better than all my lower bit CD players for the sound quality, more details, dynamics, musically and etc..

Those specs aren't important. What really matters is the implementation, including the digital filter, the jitter rejection, and the output stage.

^This. A well designed 24/96kHz unit will outperform a badly designed 24/192kHz unit everyday of the week, and twice on Sunday. :)
