240 volume sweep

This isn't exactly a problem, but more of a curiosity. My 240, playing through a 3300 is very docile up to the half-way point of the volume control, and beyond that, it becomes a tiger. I haven't noticed any unsusual distortion or clipping beyond that point, but the volume control seem almost dead below the half-way point.

As a kind of control, I have a 2270 hooked up to the tuner input on my 3300, and through it I have 2 more speakers powered by the receiver's amp. The 2270, controlled by the 3300 seems much more sensitive, pushing very quickly to overload a little past half way on the volume control. It's nearly as loud as the 240, but it seems to have a much more linear sweep as I increase the volume than does the 240, which is quiet until about half-way, then seems to wake up and bang-a-gong past that point.

Does this indicate something amiss with the 240? Bias? DC balance? Something more serious? What do you think?

Have you tried the 2270 as a pre into the 240? How does it sound?

Linear vs Audio Taper pots... Would be my guess.. Plus the gain of the 240 is most likely lower than the 2270's amp...

Older Pre-amps usually have linear taper pots. Where as the 2270 has an audio taper volume pot.

An amps gain is not the same as its power output.... you can have a lower gain but higher power output. This forces the volume knob up higher....

Bypassing the 3300, the 2270's preamp does seem to have more of an audio taper volume, becoming steadily more loud right up to full volume. It's kind of ironic that sonically, the linear taper sounds more parabolic, whereas the audio taper sounds more linear.
