FWIW I prefer the Shuguangs over my RCA 2a3's.
Interesting, I've seen the Sovteks take more current than the RCAs without getting upset.:scratch2:

Store them in a safe place as an investment and build your amp around some Shuguang 2a3's.
After you get the setup up and running with the Shuguang's then and only then try them as a swap to see if there is a substantial enough difference to justify run NOS 2A3's. Especially if they are globe types.
Just my opinion.

Good point Jay and I agree, power supplies seem to be a big part of this too and the best I've heard where built around what I think you are referring to - big PIO caps, chokes, tube rectifiers, etc. I do think though that good output iron in combination with these power supplies are important and seem to be key ingredients in the 'great' SET amps I've heard.
James (outputs, choke, pt) in my 2A3 amp, Electra-Print outputs in my 300B amps.
You can make good headphones amp with 2A3. But in real life even 300B SET is barely sufficient for less than 100dB/W speakers. Push-pull 300B, or SE 845/211 is what necessary to get reasonably loud sound.
Actually boomy bass is sign of incompatibility between amp and speaker. Bass is much less boomy when I use 300W Bryston amp, rather than 15W 845 SET.I have used a 45 SET driven amp with speakers having 85-87 dB@1 watt/ 1 meter and been completely happy with the results. OTOH, I'm not a fan of big, boomy bass like some here.
