$365 for a great condition Technics SA-5370?

Hey AK,

Been looking to upgrade from pre-amp to amp for my technics sl-1500 and came across this listing on Facebook marketplace for $365…


“Technics SA-5370 made in 1977 it’s in beautiful condition, new lights, controls thoroughly cleaned, chassis has been sealed and is in beautiful condition, front panel has been polished and detailed, knobs removed and hand polished, no leaky capacitors. I have it hooked up to a turntable and CD player it sounds great with lots of low end bass. You won’t find a cleaner vintage Technics in this condition. No shipping local pick up only.”

The pictures look great and I love the vintage look. Is it a decent deal?

and depends on where you are, if there is slim pickins it could be worth it to you

I know the seller. He prices high and has no idea what he's doing.
If you really want that model and can get it for $300, cool, but otherwise I'd pass.

I'll echo the others - seems too high based on sold listings, and what I've seen bigger models sell for in that Technics series. If it was recapped and in clean shape, that might be another story.

$200-300 seems to be a fair market range for an unrestored example and based on condition.

Well what did you decide? Sometimes condition is everything and also know that these units are still considered a bit under the radar compared to their comparable contemporaries by Pioneer, Sansui, or Marantz. I think I saw the unit on your local Craigslist now at $329. I don't think it's a bad price at all if the seller took some time to check it out and clean it. You could check the DC offset at the speaker terminals with a voltmeter, one indication of an amplifier's overall health. I also saw a SA 5560 for $260 which I think is a steal, even with a stuck power switch. That could be remedied by yourself or a handy Tech locally.

FWIW, I have an SA-5760 (165wpc) and I would not trade it for a Pioneer SX-1250, as I like its sound a bit better. I would trade it for another Sansui G Series receiver however. I think if you already have a Technics turntable this is a no-brainer.
