4000 tuner string slipping

the tuner string on my sansui 4000 is slipping sometimes making it difficult to tune radio stations. i pulled the cabinet hoping to find a loose screw but i don't think it's that easy. when it happens i can see the string slip on the spindle that's part of the knob. does that mean it needs a new string? and if so is it hard to replace? thanks-jim

Get some Beeswax and coat the string with the beeswax.

It's not too hard if you have the manual. the hardest thing is to get the knots on the springs at the right point so the tension is correct.

I have changed out a pully to a larger one before. Worked great.

It's either that or tighten the string, which can be a pain.

Violin bow rosin crushed up and placed onto the string looping around the tuning shaft will sometimes be all that is needed .

I'll second the beeswax fix, has worked for me a couple times, counterintuitive to put wax on something that's already slipping but it works.:thmbsp:

On my TU-999, wax on the string was not enough , i used Brasso metal polish on the shaft,lot of hot water in a sprayer ,contact cleaner/lubricant,and warm a mix of motor oil and bearings grease.

It's better now.
