4412 woofer replacement

A buddy's 4412 has a woofer that according to him is blown. He says he can feel the coil rubbing. He's tried to find a replacement woofer but again according to him they are unobtainable . He's contacted all the repair sites and got nowhere, evidently because not enough units sold for JBL to create repair or replacement units.

Anybody have any thoughts on what his next move should be?

yes, he should not jump to conclusions.

I don't know off hand which woofers are in the 4412 but my 4311B have the 2213H woofers and the foam filters disintegrated causing what feels like voice-coil rub but it's actually the foam in the gap.

I've read where some have removed the disintegrated foam from the vc gap but i have not yet tried it.

Ask him to measure the voice coils with a multimeter

Thanks very much. He didn't know about Upland Speakers/Edgewound and will be contacting them. I'll also pass along the info about the voice coils.

if the voice coils measure okay, then it's more than likely foam debris in the gap

I have 4412s and from the specs sheet it's 128H-1

The 128H is a common but excellent woofer. It was in the L150, 4412, L112, L120ti and probably others, and it's also the recommended replacement substitution for the L122A from the L166 and L65. JBL made a lot of them.

Aftermarket parts are available and they can be reconed if necessary.

I recommend buying a temporary replacement if your friend decides to send out the repair - it can take a while. I am surprised your friend could not find any - there are two on eBay right now that look pretty good and there's also a beater which can probably be rehabbed.
