5000A vs. 5000X question

After looking over a friends 5000A and comparing to my 5000X there seems that Sansui made revisions than just the updated F-6013 boards. Some I'm sure were to accomodate the newer board transition, but one that we noticed was the 5000A has a lamp on the right side of the face plate which lights up if it goes into protection. The 5000X does not have this visual feature. I was wondering if the 5000X still incorporated the protection circuit in it's design?

I don't think either model has a relay based protection circuit. That technology didn't show up until the Six or Seven were released. The Eight didn't have it but the Eight deluxe does.

Also, the early production 5000x uses the same flawed amp boards as the 5000a. The 6013 was phased in sometime after the start of 5000x production.

I think JD Pylon did a bunch of research and work on this series of receiver, and there's a thread in the FAQ at the top of the page that talks about it.
I don't have anything but the 5000X and it has the improved board.

I'm working on a fellow AK members 5000A. Some of the bulbs are listed in the parts list, others aren't. One example is the meter bulb. Nothing listed.

That's JP Dylon.

The modification, put simply, is to replace the big black dual-forward bias diode mounted on the driver transistors with low-failure-rate devices. The original diodes tend to open up and fry the output transistors.

It's a thoroughly discussed and well documented modification/upgrade here on AK, no doubt about it. Just one tiny little problem:

Nearly impossible to get the right parts to actually PERFORM the upgrade anymore.

Ya I looked for the diodes listed no luck. So the upgrade is a non starter.
Question can the earlier 1040 boards be swapped out with the new 6013 with no mods?

What are the diodes? Any pictures? I probably have some. I dont have the aluminum clip type in the 5000, but I do have several drawers of black large old diodes. I have a supply of SVT-3,4 also.

Well I can tell you the 5000A does have a lamp that when on says protection it is located upper left on the face plate. It is the same type of lamp as the stereo indictor lamp.

Again I ask can the 6013 board be used as a direct swap for the 1040 board.

I stand corrected, been looking at Jordan's posts for over a year and for some reason had the sign in name wrong the entire time. Damn eyeballs.
My apologies Jordan.

It does look like the 5000a has a rudimentary protection circuit, board F-1041, but it's not relay based.

The 6013 board is not a drop in replacement for the 1040 board. There are a number of modifications outlined in a service letter that need to be made to install it:

1) Remove the blue and gray lead lines (marked on the schematic a c') from both channels. They are not necessary when using the f-6013. Remove also the resistor R-036 and R-037 (6.8K ohm)
2) Protector lead B on the F-1040-1 should be connected to the F-6013, a 2.2k ohm resistor should be added between the protector lead (white and black) contact and the collector of TR-805 (2sa566).
3)8c and 8d on the schematic of the f-6013 should be shorted.
4) Add 330 ohm between c005 and c006 (2000uf 80v negative) and ground (chassis).
5) After the complete replacement adjust the bias to 15mA +/- 2mA.

Thanks for the info on how to swap the boards I have two 6013 coming so I will keep you informed and may be asking for clarifications

Questions
R36 and R37 where are these located?
2.2k resistor what wattage 1/4 or 1/2 or ???
330 ohm what wattage ???
Are you saying to put a 330 ohm from the negative lead of c005 to ground? And also do the same for c006?
Thanks

I took that information from a service letter that Sansui sent to dealers to install the f-6013 board in place of the 1040 board. I haven't done it myself so I haven't wrapped up the loose ends. You will need a schematic to track down R36 and R37. I'd use 1/2 watt resistors. Maybe someone that has done the installation can fill in the blanks.

Pete
Thanks for this info.
Any chance I can get a copy of this service letter?
Or can you give me the number so I can see if I can find it to purchase it?
I bought a 5000A service manual and a service bulletin CE-037A
this covers the swap for the 5000X with the 1040-1 boards.
Well the 5000A has the 1040 boards not sure if it is the right procedures.
This document has no reference to the 330 ohm resistors.....:scratch2:
I am getting more and more confused.....
Thanks Jerry

That is the whole text of the letter. No further explanation given. The only source for a 6013 board is donor receiver. Look to see how it is installed before pulling it out.
