I`m running a Sansui 5000X which has 55wpc I have it hooked to four KLH model six speakers and run all four together on ch A,B With the volume half way up everything sounds fine.I would like to listen much louder but a crap sound starts past having the volume knob turned more than half way. So do I need different speakers that can handle the vol knob turned most all the way up ? Or am I wrong to want to turn it up much louder ? If it is the fact I need better speakers, which ones would work with this unit ?

Those are some truly fine speaks that sit solid in comparison for that whole era......have they been gone through? (With KLH from that period it is a must.)

At 55 wpc . With a 12 o'clock volume control you are probably reaching the max potential from the 5000x.( clipping distortion)... Now you could also have a dirty or bad volume control.Get some deoxit and properly clean that volume control.

You could also have a power supply issue. But will try the cheaper easy stuff first. Do you know how th use a multimeter? Just in case.

I am not sure of the specs on those speakers, I was told by the person I brought them from that they had been gone though. I am really happy with the sound of them ! The used audio store where I brought the 5000X told me the unit had been gone though. When turning the volume knob it sounds clean to me. Yes the sound does start to get distortion past 12 o`clock and gets worst the higher I turn the volume up. Is this sorta the norm with this unit and one`s similar ? If so do I need to get a unit that has more wpc to be able to listen to the volume louder ? I do not no how to use a multimeter nor dyi repairs...

One of the first things I would do is see if the unit has the newer F6013 driver boards in there.

As Avionic is saying, it may be time for some Deoxit, even though they said it has been gone through.

I found out with mine and looking at the schematic, that some of the push button switches are in line with the volume pot, and were in need a good cleaning to, even when the push button switches are in the off position.

I don't know how your even able to run the volume at 12:00, but my ears are getting older and worn out.

I have a 5000A with HPM-100s. Turning the volume pot to 12:00 would blow me out of the room & I turned 70 today!

Are your KLH Sixes rated for 8Ω?

Try working with 2 at a time, just "A" or just "B", and tell us if that is any different than "A + B".

Well Happy belated BD to you, I just turned sixty last month so yes I can still handle the volume. The KLH are 8 ohms , I did try working just 2 speakers at a time. Both sets sounded good with just a tad difference in tone. I can actually turn it up a few more notches before the sound stops sounding clear

I remember back in my Army days, a guy in signal had a new 5000a and a pair of 2000 speakers. Took it outside one day and tested it out. Those radio guys are different. With tone controls flat we really gave it a workout. At half volume we were broadcasting. At full volume we got back about a hundred feet and it actually sounded clean and clear. Pretty incredible, hear it on the moon. Talked to him a couple years ago and the old Sansui is still singing, untouched. But if set up right it should go to full volume with decent sound - if you can stand it. Might need a service, adjustments, etc.

That`s how I remember hearing my brothers 5000a in 1970. loud clean clear, that is what I`m looking for.

The input sensitivity pot on the back of the unit can be adjusted so the volume on the front wont clip at "part throttle". Doing so does not change the actual power output of the unit, however it makes the volume knob less sensitive. My father had this same unit from Vietnam and using the Sp-2000's he calibrated that sensitivity so it would not clip if someone cranked the knob on the front to max. If that unit is running clean it should be fairly loud with the SP-2000 since they were fairly efficient speakers for the day. Check the driver boards like the others suggested if they are the F-6013 then your in good shape and likely wont toast the outputs.

I have a restored 2000X and I can go to about 2:00 before it starts to distort. This is the case with my speakers [JBL L19s] and my headphones [Grado SR325is].

Mr.White I too have a redone upgraded 2000x. With the typical input source CD/Radio etc max output power is usually reached around 12-2:00 on the volume knob, where on the dial it reaches peak clean power is completely dependent upon the output level of the source connected.
