50hz pulley upgrade for AR XB

Register to hide this ad
Is this an "upgrade"? I figure it's either your country's power grid frequency is 50Hz and you need the thicker pulley - or it's 60Hz and you need the thinner. No?

Yes correct, the upgrade is just made from something like co plymor

What some do it fill it with a putty or silicone sealant.

If using the sealant fill it over the top and use a flat razor blade to cut off the excess .

This reduces resonance but doesn't add mass which helps keep speed better.

I used frost king putty rope and filled it using smaller pieces to make sure there were no air gaps
therefore keeping it in balance. after adding the rope caulk turn the pulley on its side on a level surface to see if it rolls to one side or another and add putty to
side that needs it to stop it from rolling.

Ok so managed to get an AR XB which will be my next project. Currently going through the available mods online and and found an upgraded pulley here
https://vinylnirvana.com/product/vinyl-nirvana-upgrade-33-45-replacement-pulley

But Dave there doesn't produce the 50hz anymore so I'm wondering if anyone here ever bought one or two and would like to sell me one? :)

Cheers!
Hi, did you manage to source one of these? I brought my AR XB back to the UK with me and wanted to replace the pulley with a 50 Hz replacement.

Thanks,
M

How do you take care of the voltage difference? I imagine a US AR XB would expect 110V.

What I am thinking is it might be more expeditious to rig up a 12VDC power supply running of your mains into a US 12VDC to 110V AC @ 60Hz inverter. Since not much power is required, this could eb done rather inexpensively, and wouldn't require any mods to the TT.

I put that on an ES-1 and am not convinced it’s any better than adding mass to the stock pulley.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a step down transformer that takes care of 240V supply down to 110V, but it will still be at 50Hz to the motor and so the speed would be wrong.

I'm not aware of a cheap device that can take 50 Hz up to 60Hz. I have a very expensive device that does it, but I want to be able to run the turntable without using that.

That's the current situation. Open to learning there is a simpler way.

Pun? Ha, ha.

Anyway, the option I suggested in my post should work, and be small and cheap. Granted, I haven't tried it, and I don't know how accurate the 60Hz is in any particular inverter. But, I have an inverter I carry in the car, a 120W one, I think, and I can try it out and let you know. I have a frequency counter and 'scope so I can attest to the quality and accuracy of the 60Hz, too. It's just a matter of if I get to it!

What's the power requirement of the XB? I mean, how many Amps, or Watts, if you prefer.
