So got the Sansui bug a while back after purchasing a 4000, and wanted to try out other models. I don’t have a ton of money but traded for a 6060, and found a cheap 661 off ebay that needed work. It only needed a good cleaning and some deoxit.
The 4000 is the winner. I’ll focus on the 6060 40watts and 661 20watts. Demo in a room 30x15ft, Dynaco A25s sitting 5ft high on a bookshelf, and slightly angled downward. Dual 1219.
The 6060 is clear, direct, and more modern. Vocals and the highs really stood out. This receiver is very bright. Bright enough I turned the tweeters down a notch on the A25s. The 6060 is loud, not like the 4000 loud either, but something I’d have running during a party. I don’t party, I have kids, and usually listen at a lower volume; jazz, classic rock, solo artists like Leonard Cohen and Eliot Smith. I usually listen to music at the end of the day to relax and felt the 6060 was okay. And maybe it is the speakers and where they are positioned, but the 6060 just didn’t fill the room like the 4000. Even with the bass turned up some.
I jumped on the 661. Cleaned off 40 years of tobacco stain and looks and sounds new. Turned the Dynaco Tweeter level back up a notch. The 661 is very different from the 6060. Very laid back. Has a warm sound that I could listen to all night and not realize what time it is. Vocals could be better, sounded overpowered by instrumentation when I was listening to Bowie, but listening to some Jazz, or some Leonard Cohen, it was pleasant. It also filled the room much better than the 6060. I felt wherever I sat I was getting what I wanted. Very happy with the 611 and actually have kept it upstairs longer than I thought. Maybe the 661 and Dynacos are just a better pairing, but it was the clear winner for me.
...think I’ll look for a 771 or 881 if the price is right.
