6270Q won't track, some help please

Hello, Got a 'parts not working' 6270q to play around with. There are two things I can find right now that prevent me from getting the total picture. It will not track a record. I can balance a cart, the cueing works, but it will not move in on the album and if I set it on a track, it stays in one place and skips. Also, the auto return'shut off at the end does not seem to function. I was hoping someone with this table might be able to provide some pictures of the insides, in particular, the underside of the tonearm assembly and the auto return mechanism. The tonearm feels like it is moving back and forth freely, I think it might have to do with the anti skate or the auto shut off feature. Thanks Rich

I've never rebuilt a Marantz TT, but I've rebuilt several Dual turntables. In my experience, if a tonearm won't track horizontally, it is not moving freely enough, and that usually means gunked up lubricant on the bottom on the tonearm auto mechanism. Not much of an answer, but just like a receiver, this calls for a service manual and some study of the mechanism. To eliminate anti skate, balance the tonearm until the stylus doesn't touch the record. If anti skate is moving the tonearm in or out, adjust it until there is no horizontal movement. If the anti skate adjustment does nothing, either it is broken or the arm is not free enough or both. I'm still betting it needs some cleaning and lube.

Thanks Steven, Found the problem, had to remove the complete tonearm assembly and the shaft that the tonearm gimbal rests on had moved up about 1/4 inch and that made the tonearm rub on the base and also moved the magnet on the 'auto shut off' be farther away from the reed switches, so they did not operate to invoke 'auto shut off'. Only trouble was trying to solder the tonearm wires back on, they are very small and thin, but finally got it. Played two albums through, so I pronounce it fixed. Didn't need another turntable, but it was only $30 broken, now it works! Thanks

Great! I've always been a Dual guy because.....well....that's what I had when I was 22. Loved 'em then and love 'em now. But now that I seem to be touching everything Marantz, I may have to pick one up. I see them around here on CL pretty often and most of them are pretty cheap - probably because they don't work. But we can take care of that, can't we?

My college table was a Dual 1218 with a shure M91ed, paired with a Marantz 4060 and Rectilinear 3 ways, still have 1 Dual a CS-450. The 450 is running with a Marantz 3800, 250 and Bose 301's. My main tables are 2 Pioneer's a PL-255 and PL-400 and then in the guest room is a Marantz 6200 and a Sony PS-T3 (wired for CD-4) connected to a Marantz 4240 in quadraphonic. So this new one, a Marantz 6270Q, will go it the second guest room with the 2235B I just finished. I know it is not 'audiophile', but I prefer an automatic turntable and out of the 6 currently in use, the only manual is the 6720Q. It is a little funny, the 6270Q's 'auto stop' at the end of record is, lift tonearm and turn off, so the needle is just hovering above a stopped record. I think the general feeling is Marantz tables are not that great, but people want to match their systems so they are popular. The 6300 is the one everyone wants and the go for $400+, too much for me. Glad you found your 'scope' issue, would have never know without the scope! Rich

That's quite a group of systems! While I have room full of receivers, I really only have one set up for listening. It doesn't fit our decorating scheme, if you know what I mean. So far, I'm giving receivers to friends and family that I know would appreciate them. But I'm going to sell some of them to recoup some of the money I've spent. I mainly just love bringing these things back to life and cleaning them up.
