On July 15, 1946, Linda Maria Ronstadt was born in Tucson, Arizona. She would come to my attention as the singer of Different Drum in 1967, as part of the Stone Poneys.

She would follow that up as a solo artist with the song Long long time from the album Silk purse.

That would be followed by a string of albums and hits that would result in eleven Grammy awards.

She is my long time favorite female artist and I have been a fan for 45 years. I don't even dare to total up the number of 8-track tapes, cassettes, vinyl albums and RTR tapes of her music that I own!

Also, on this date in 1955, "DJ" was born. She grew up in Charleston, SC and came to my attention when I was a junior in college. Drawn like a moth to a flame, I was smitten the first time I ever saw her. After I graduated from college, I took a position with a large electric utility, neccessitating a move to another state. The never too serious relationship was terminated at that point, but I still have bittersweet memories.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LADIES!

Ah yes, Senorita Linda...muy linda, in fact. One of my earliest 8 tracks was "Evergreen, Part 2" with Different Drum. A vastly underappreciated album, IMHO.

Other than that album, I've got all of her Capitol stuff on vinyl, including the very first Stone Poneys album, which isn't nearly as good as Evergreen, but a nice thing to have.

If you're a completist, she sang backup (but clearly audible) on at least one Seldom Scene album, Old Train. I'm sure there are others.

Happy Birthday, ladies! :beerchug: The thing about Linda is, you can get so dazzled by her beauty, that her voice doesn't even really matter, but the beauty part is, she sings great too. :D

Look for the light

One of my favorite artists is B.W. Stephenson. His best known song was My Maria, released in 1973. He also recorded and released Shambala in 1973, but Three Dog Night recorded the song shortly after and released it. With 3DN being the more well-known artist, it was their version that got the airplay.

I made it a point to collect all of his albums and discovered that on his late 1973 release, Calabasas, there is a song titled Look for the light. Miss Ronstadt sings backup on that song, and it is so easy to tell that it is her!

Voices on the Wind on Little Feat's album Let it Roll is a particularly good duet featuring Linda.

That's one of the things about playing recorded music... it's a frozen in place bit of time.
Linda Ronstadt's albums which I own are from the mid 1970's to 1982, and to me, she'll always sound no older than 30.
Happy Birthday, Linda.

LR brings back happy memories to Yrs trly, too. BW Stephenson had a minor hit w/"A Love Song" back around 1973-74. Anne Murray covered it, too, I can't tell which version I like better..

Happy Birthday Linda! All of her music is enjoyable. Heart Like a Wheel is still a personal top 5 all-time album, and lately I've been listening to Wonderwall - The Tucson Sessions, duets with Emmylou Harris. For a Dancer rocks.

Enjoy the music,
-Mark

This thread is worthless without pictures of "DJ".
:naughty:

Since "DJ" is not a public person, I will respect her privacy and not post a picture of her.

However.....she looked almost exactly like this picture of Linda on the album cover of Don't cry now.

Now you know why she caught my attention!

I agree, that is an excellent song! Oh, and thanks to the OP for reminding us just how old we really are (like we really needed to be reminded...). That photo is fantastic!!

One of my favorite female singers. Somebody mentioned her singing with The Seldom Scene. She and Emmy Lou Harris have been good friends with the Scene for years. Linda also sang harmonies on a song that Chesapeake recorded called "Bed of Roses." Chesapeake was an off-shoot of the Scene that came about in the 90s. I had the privilege of being their FOH engineer for their entire run. When Chesapeake was working up the vocal arrangement for BoR, Mike Auldridge asked, "What female singer can we get to sing the really pretty tenor harmony on the chorus?" I jokingly said, "Why don't you give your buddy, Linda, a call?" Three weeks later, our singer, Moondi Klein, was in a studio in Tucson with her laying down the tracks.

Now I tour as FOH with The Seldom Scene. Go figure.

I would be hard pressed to argue with you on that. I know I have stated this before elsewhere around here but her vocal range is second to none IMO. She, too, is my favorite female singer. 70salesguy, have you heard her Spanish albums? "Canciones de mi Padre" and "Mas Canciones"? If you are a fan I'm sure you have. Silly of me. You don't need to understand Spanish to appreciate these. Beautiful. "Winter Light" is another one I like very much. Heck, I like all of her music.

By far my favorite song by B.W. Stephenson. Brooks and Dunn did a nice remake but Stephenson's version is still tops. I like your taste in music. :D
